Tamanna (Hindi: तमन्ना, translation: Desire) is a 1997 Indian drama film directed by Mahesh Bhatt. It stars Paresh Rawal, Pooja Bhatt, Sharad Kapoor and Manoj Bajpai in the lead roles The screenplay was written by Tanuja Chandra. The story was written by Tanuja Chandra and Mahesh Bhatt. It was produced by Pooja Bhatt.
Synopsis
The year is 1975, the place is Mahim, Bombay. This is the story of Tikku (Paresh Rawal), a eunuch, the only child of yesteryear Bollywood actress Nazneen Begum. She has fallen upon hard times, is virtually destitute and is dependent on Tikku, who does make-up/hair-dressing of Bollywood actresses. When she passes away, Tikku is beside himself with grief. After the funeral, he witnesses a woman leaving a child in a garbage bin. Tikku picks up the girl, longing for human company, decides to keep her, names her Tamanna, and brings her up on his own with the help of a close friend, Saleem (Manoj Bajpai).Actors

This movie begins with an image of star, Alex Ramos. Pooja has been brought up by her grandparents, and has no recollection of her mom and dad. She is told by her grandpa, Kantaprasad, that her dad had died. Years later, Pooja has now grown up. She starts getting mysterious phone calls from a male who merely says "I love you", and hangs-up. When her grandpa has these phone calls traced, the caller is Anand, Pooja's dad. Kantaprasad has him beaten up, and warns him against contacting Pooja again. When Pooja is being molested by a male in her apartment building, Anand comes to her rescue, and it is then Pooja comes to know that this shabby, alcoholic man is her dad. Slowly as the story progresses, more facts about the reason of his alcoholism come to light, and he is able to overcome them eventually with the help of Pooja's love and her support.

Roop Rathore (Shahrukh Khan) is a singer in Bombay just like his father (Anupam Kher), who is now sick and needs immediate medical care. One day, while he is singing at Ajay Narang's (Naseeruddin Shah) hotel, Ajay's sister Reshma (Ramya Krishnan) falls in love with Roop. Reshma is a spoiled girl and Ajay looks through all of her wishes. Unfortunately, Roop is in love with a doctor named Pooja (Pooja Bhatt). Meanwhile, Reshma is obsessed with Roop, and asks her brother to call him again to sing in their hotel. But when she sees that all the girls are flattered over Roop, she gets very angry, and asks him to sing only for her now onwards. But Roop would rather work for rival Patel (Shri Vallabh Vyas) than take this offer. Ajay's obsession with keeping his sister happy at all costs comes into play and Patel is brutally beaten by him until he agrees to throw Roop out of his hotel. Desperately in need of money for his father's operation, Roop has no option but to agree to Reshma. Roop breaks up with Pooja.

Rahul is angry with his dad for marrying a second time, while his first wife is still alive; Anu ran away from an oppressive girls' hostel run by Arnie Campbell (Tom Alter). They meet and fall in love. Rahul helps Anu in becoming independent and seeking a job. Anu is approached by a talent agent to be a model, an offer which she accepts. The story follows Simran (Mallika Sherawat), a young woman married to Sudhir (Ashmit Patel), a workaholic and ex-husband of her dead sister. In the small village of Champaner, (in the State of Gujarat, in western India) during the height of the British Empire in India in 1893, Captain Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne), the commanding officer of the Champaner cantonment, has imposed high taxes ("lagaan") on people from the local villages which they are unable to pay due to a prolonged drought. The film was made famous by the excellent portrayal of the eunuch, Maharani (Sadashiv Amrapurkar), an evil madam running a brothel that employs many girls like Pooja (Pooja Bhatt) and Chanda (Neelima Azeem). Ravi (Sanjay Dutt), a taxi driver, meets Pooja before she is bought by Maharani, and his friend Gotya (Deepak Tijori) is in love with Chanda. Ravi witnessed his sister Roopa (Soni Razdan) plunge to her death after being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease. She had eloped with her lover who sold her off at a brothel and forced her to become a prostitute. This violent incident has left Ravi traumatised and scarred for life, as he has become an insomniac who keeps having disturbing visions of his sister's death and is restless and violent on occasions.On one of his taxi plying days, he meets Inspector Irani (Pankaj Dheer), who Ravi recognises from an article that was published about the cop when he had won a medal. Ravi drops him off to his destination, refuses to take any money from him and the cop tells him to come to him if he ever needs help of any kind.
