The Battle of Algiers (Italian: La battaglia di Algeri; Arabic: معركة الجزائر; French: La Bataille d'Alger) is a 1966 war film based on occurrences during the Algerian War (1954–62) against the French government in North Africa, the most prominent being the titular Battle of Algiers. An Italo-Algerian production, it was directed by Gillo Pontecorvo and shot on location. The film, which was shot in a Rossellini-inspired newsreel style—in black and white with documentary-type editing—is often associated with Italian neorealism cinema.
The film has been critically celebrated and often taken, by insurgent groups and states alike, as an important commentary on urban guerrilla warfare. It occupies the 48th place on the Critics' Top 250 Films of the 2012 Sight & Sound poll as well as 120th place on Empire magazine's list of the 500 greatest movies of all time.
Algeria gained independence from the French, a matter which Pontecorvo portrays in the film's epilogue. The film concentrates on the years between 1954 and 1957 when the guerrilla fighters regrouped and expanded into the Casbah, which was met by French paratroopers attempting to regain territory. The highly dramatic film is about the organization of a guerrilla movement and the methods used by the colonial power to contain it.
A subject of socio-political controversy, the film wasn't screened for five years in France, where it was later released in 1971.
Synopsis
En 1954 à Alger, le Front de libération nationale (FLN) diffuse son premier communiqué : son but est l'indépendance nationale vis-à-vis de la France, et la restauration de l'État algérien. Ali la Pointe propose des parties de bonneteau. Repéré par la police, il s'enfuit mais se fait agresser par un passant, il réplique et se fait tabasser par le reste du groupe. Rattrapé par la police, il se fait arrêter. Emprisonné, il assiste par la fenêtre de sa cellule à l'exécution d'une peine de mort par guillotine sur un nationaliste. Le FLN le contacte.Actors

Comme chaque année à Zitouna, passe un montreur d'ours. Avec sa créature, il vient défier la petite communauté. Et comme tous les ans, c'est Slimane El Mabrouk qui défend l'honneur de la tribu. Mais cette fois, il en meurt, laissant deux orphelins, Omar et Ourida. Spoliés de leur héritage, les enfants vont grandir seuls. Les années passent, l'armée française s'installe, et avec elle, la guerre. Mystérieusement, un jour, après le meurtre d'un légionnaire français, Omar disparaît dans le maquis, tandis que sa soeur meurt en couches. Omar reviendra au village, bien plus tard, une fois l'indépendance acquise, en représentant du pouvoir et avec cette formule énigmatique :"Il faut que vous sachiez que la Révolution ne vous a pas oubliés". Vengeance personnelle ? Volonté sincère d'apporter le progrès et la modernité ?... Les habitants de Zitouna, bouleversés dans leur mode de vie ancestral, ne tarderont pas à avoir une réponse à leurs questions.

In 1962, René Vautier, together with some Algerian friends, organized an audiovisual formation center to encourage a "dialogue in images" between the two factions. A film was edited from that experience, but the French police partially destroyed it. The images that were saved represent an unprecedented historical document: They tell of the Algerian War and the history of the ALN (National Liberation Army), as well as showing life after the war and, particularly, the reconstruction of the cities and the countryside after the war of Independence.
