The film opens in the countryside outside the fictional town of Lahood, California, and takes place sometime in the 1870s or early 1880s (based on remarks in the film about outlawing hydraulic mining). Thugs working for big-time miner Coy LaHood ride in and destroy the camp of a group of struggling miners and their families who have settled in nearby Carbon Canyon and are panning for gold there. In leaving, they also shoot the little dog of fourteen-year-old Megan Wheeler. As Megan buries it in the woods and prays for a miracle, we see a stranger heading to the town on horseback.

Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood) is a KRML radio jockey who broadcasts nightly from a studio in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, often incorporating poetry into his program. He lives a rather freewheeling bachelor lifestyle. At his favorite bar, seemingly by coincidence, he encounters a woman named Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter). Dave drives Evelyn home, where she reveals that their meeting was not coincidental; she deliberately sought him out after hearing the bar mentioned on his radio show. He guesses correctly that she is a recurring caller who always requests the jazz standard "Misty." The two have sex.

Earl Stone est un paisible horticulteur âgé de plus de 80 ans, vétéran de la guerre de Corée. Endetté jusqu’au cou et sans perspective réelle d’emploi, il accepte un travail particulièrement facile et lucratif : celui de chauffeur. On lui demande seulement de transporter des sacs d'une ville à une autre au volant de son pick-up. Il découvre assez rapidement qu'il s'agit de drogue et qu'il travaille pour le compte d’un cartel mexicain : un go fast apaisé, pense-t-il. Mais alors que ses factures passent au rayon des mauvais souvenirs, le poids de son passé refait surface : aider la famille et les amis... et il ne peut s'empêcher de leur venir en aide en poursuivant cette activité. Mais il va falloir faire vite, car Colin Bates, agent de la Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), se met à traquer ce passeur efficace.

Ben Shockley, an alcoholic cop from Phoenix, is well on his way to becoming a down-and-out when he is given the task to escort witness Gus Mally from Las Vegas.
