Lorsque l’on retrouve le corps de Gottlieb Dornhelm, le beau-fils du directeur de l'Opéra, et que la police conclut à un suicide, le Tout-Salzbourg pousse un soupir de soulagement. En publiant récemment un livre où il révélait les sévices qu'il avait subis étant jeune, dans un internat religieux, le suicidé ne s'était pas fait que des amis. Persuadée que la police a mené une enquête de complaisance, la ravissante veuve Konstance Dornhelm engage le détective Simon Brenner pour tenter de découvrir la vérité. Pour être recueilli au monastère de l’internat, il se déguise en sans-abri et plonge dans le monde vicié du silence religieux. Aidé de son vieil ami Berti devenu coursier pour l’Opéra, il s’infiltre dans les coulisses du festival de Salzbourg. En se mettant à enquêter sur tout ce que la ville de Mozart et de Freud compte de soutanes et de tutus, Brenner soulèvera quelques vérités qui ne sentent pas forcément très bon.

Set in 2004, the film revolves around three young anti-capitalist activists in Berlin's city centre: Jule (Julia Jentsch), her boyfriend Peter (Stipe Erceg) and his best friend Jan (Daniel Brühl). Jule is a waitress struggling to pay off a €100,000 debt she incurred a year ago when she crashed into a Mercedes-Benz S-Class belonging to a wealthy businessman named Hardenberg (Burghart Klaußner). After her eviction for non-payment of rent she moves in with Peter and Jan, who are often out all night. In a month with two full moons, Austrian petty criminal Johnny Pichler is hired to carry a bag of cash to the Slovakian border and deliver it to a gangster. Johnny arrives late in a battered taxi. He is forced into the car behind the gangster's beautiful but unhappy escort. Shirley, who is no bimbo, squirts the gangster with an incapacitating spray, kicks him out of the car and races away with Johnny and the cash. The pair makes a series of unsuccessful attempts to sell the obviously stolen car. In a Slovak hotel Johnny offers to buy Shirley's share of the car with his share of the cash. She refuses but when he returns from the bar, she is gone.
