Il s'inspire des événements de la marée noire du port de Xingang de juillet 2010 lors de laquelle la rupture et l'explosion de deux pipelines avaient fait déverser 1 500 tonnes de pétrole dans la mer Jaune, créant une nappe s'étendant jusqu'à 946 km².
Il totalise plus de 150 millions $ au box-office chinois de 2019 et est l’un des sept films principaux produits pour célébrer le 70e anniversaire de la fondation de la République populaire de Chine.
Synopsis
Après l'explosion d'un pipeline de pétrole, un réservoir de stockage d'une capacité maximum de 100 000 mètres cubes explose à son tour et menace de faire exploser les réservoirs de pétrole adjacents à tout moment. De plus, tout cela a lieu près d'une zone de stockage de produits chimiques dangereux et extrêmement inflammables. Les pompiers se débattent alors avec courage pour enrayer la propagation de l'incendie et sauver l'ensemble de la ville comptant des millions d'habitantsActors

In the Arizona desert, truck driver Martin "Rubber Duck" Penwald is passed by a woman in a Jaguar E-Type, which leads to an encounter with a sheriff's deputy. Proceeding on his way, Rubber Duck runs into fellow truck drivers Pig Pen/Love Machine and Spider Mike, when another "trucker" informs them over the C.B. that they are okay to increase their speed. The "trucker" turns out to be cold county Sheriff "Dirty Lyle" Wallace, a long-time nemesis of the Duck, who extorts them for $70 each.

At a loading dock in Cleveland, Ohio in 1937, supervisor Mr. Gant welcomes a new worker, Lincoln Dombrowsky (Frank McRae). Gant tells him the job requirements and pay rules. He'll be paid for working 8 hours and if he has to work overtime, he still gets paid only for 8 hours. If he drops any of the merchandise, the cost comes directly out of his pay. These are examples of unfair working practices faced by the laborers. Later Dombrowsky drops a few carts of tomatoes, which is taken out of his pay; another worker is fired for helping him collect the fallen merchandise. Johnny Kovak (Sylvester Stallone), another worker resentful of mistreatment, leads a riot. Afterward, the workers go to the office of Boss Andrews. Kovak believes he negotiates a deal for the workers, but the next day he and his friend Abe Belkin (David Huffman) are told they are fired.

The film opens with Baltimore firefighter Jack Morrison (Joaquin Phoenix) saving a man's life in a massive four-alarm fire in a 20-story concrete grain elevator/warehouse in the Canton waterfront neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland; however the grain being stored in the warehouse explodes, sending Jack falling through several floors, breaking his leg on landing. The film follows the efforts of the other men in his unit, Ladder Company 49, led by the commands of Deputy Chief Mike Kennedy (John Travolta), Jack's longtime mentor, to rescue him while Morrison tries to reach a safe area of the burning structure. Interspersed with the current rescue efforts are a series of flashbacks showing how Jack joined the fire department, his first meeting (at a supermarket) with the woman who would eventually become his wife (Jacinda Barrett), his relationship with his children, and the bonds he formed and the trials and tribulations he endured with his fellow firefighters.

En 1980, un journaliste allemand travaille au Japon pour une chaîne de télévision allemande. Au mois de mai de la même année a lieu, en Corée du Sud, le soulèvement de Gwangju. L’incendie est découvert par un policier qui tente en vain de pénétrer dans la maison. Il donne l’alerte. Les pompiers sortent une voiture de secours et attellent les chevaux qui s’élancent, immédiatement suivis par un autre véhicule. Dans sa chambre enfumée, un homme se désespère. Suffoquant, il essaye d’éteindre le feu qui le menace en versant l’eau d’un broc, une tentative dérisoire. Il cherche à sortir par la porte, il en est empêché par les flammes que l’on devine sur le palier. L’homme s’effondre sur le lit, évanoui. Lorsque le feu gagne les rideaux, les flammes en dévorant le voilage découvrent un pompier qui est là, derrière la fenêtre, juché sur une échelle. À coups de hache, il abat la croisée et entre, tirant derrière lui une lance d’incendie qu’il met en œuvre. Puis il prend l’homme toujours inconscient dans ses bras et l’évacue par la fenêtre. Portant l’homme sur son dos, il descend l'échelle. Arrivé au sol, le rescapé, qui a retrouvé ses esprits, se lamente, désignant la fenêtre, son enfant est restée dans la maison. Un autre pompier enfonce la porte et revient avec la fillette dans les bras, qu’il tend à son père, reconnaissant. À l’étage, un autre homme apparaît à une fenêtre, on tend une toile de secours, l’homme saute. Il est indemne, on l’évacue.

On September 11, 2001, Port Authority Police officers John McLoughlin and Will Jimeno are patrolling the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan when they see a plane fly dangerously low overhead. As all of the police officers return to the station, they see on TV that the North Tower of the World Trade Center has been hit by the plane. Sergeant McLoughlin assigns many of the officers to assist in a precautionary evacuation attempt of the North Tower and they board a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus. On the bus, they hear reports that the South Tower is also hit by another plane. When they arrive at the World Trade Center, they realize the extent of the disaster, and see one of the victims jump out of the towers to certain death. The men proceed to get safety equipment from Building 5 and enter the concourse between the towers.

Lee Dae-ho (Kim Sang-kyung) is a single father and manager of the 120 story luxurious landmark building complex, Tower Sky in Yeouido, Seoul. He is an earnest employee liked by his colleagues and is secretly in love and secretly even wanted to marry with Seo Yoon-hee (Son Ye-jin), a restaurant manager. The owner of the complex, Mr. Jo decides to hold a "White Christmas" party for tenants and VIPs on Christmas Eve, with helicopters circling above with huge lights attached below them, sprinkling snow onto the party. Dae-ho has promised to spend the day at an amusement park with his daughter Ha-na, but had to cancel when he is needed at the party. However, the building has faulty water sprinklers due to frozen pipes, but Mr. Cha, the Tower Sky's safety section head, is more concerned for the party than any possible architectural errors within the building, despite warnings from his fellow employers about these errors. (One example of their warnings is when cook Young-cheol (Jeon Bae-soo) accidentally leaves a stove on for too long and causes a minor fire.) Young-cheo is in love with a receptionist within the building named Min-jung, and even sneaks out of the kitchen while on duty to make her an ice cream. Meanwhile, Lee Seon-woo (Do Ji-han) is a rookie fireman entering the Yeouido Fire Station. When he gets accepted, he learns that many of the firefighters get more breaks than actual firefighting. In a prank to fool Seon-woo, the other firefighters ring the fire alarm for the squad to assemble while he takes a shower, causing him to appear in front of his entire team naked, much to the other firefighters' and even his own pleasure as they put his helmet on him for the first time.
