The Breaking of Bumbo is a 1970 British comedy film written and directed by Andrew Sinclair, a former Coldstream Guards National service officer that was updated from his 1959 novel of the same name that featured the Suez Crisis. It starred Richard Warwick, Joanna Lumley, Jeremy Child and Edward Fox.

Synopsis

A ghostly British naval officer(Niven) persuades four members of the American navy to launch an attack on Japanese positions, hoping to redeem the family honor and his own tattered record from the First World War. With his typical luck he actually succeeds in sinking a Japanese naval vessel -- *after* it had officially surrendered to the US Navy. As a result, he is seen again consigned to sailing his ship forever, this time in a children's amusement park lake, to await another chance at redemption.

After meeting in the Navy recruiting line, Al Crowthers (Dean Martin) and Melvin Jones (Jerry Lewis) become friends. Al has tried to enlist before, 11 times, but was always rejected because of a bad knee. Melvin, meanwhile, is allergic to women's cosmetics and his doctor prescribed ocean travel, so he decided to join the Navy as this was the only way he could afford to follow doctor's orders.
