Clara, (Sylvie Testud), works in a birdshop. She is concerned about her deaf-mute daughter Anna, (Camille Gauthier), whom she is bringing up on her own. She has never spoken a single word. Clara herself is illiterate. Ever since her grandmother Baba, whom she adored, had been the victim of an attack when she was reading her a story, she has always refused to learn to read and write. Now that the silence of her daughter Anna is causing her to be bullied by her peers, Clara feels obliged to withdraw her from her school, and to enrol her in a school for the deaf-mute, run by Vincent, (Sergi López). Vincent, the principal, suggests giving his new pupil particular classes to teach her Sign Language, and so facilitate Anna's integration.

Le capitaine Alfred de Morsac (Thierry Lhermitte) accoste en 1918 avec son navire militaire sur une île imaginaire appelée Fenua Poerava (« île de la perle noire » en tahitien), un paradis perdu dans l'archipel polynésien. Il est décoré de la Croix de guerre, et vient former un bataillon de tirailleurs océaniens pour renforcer les troupes de Verdun. Mais les habitants, les Hiva, sous la coupe de l'ignoble et cupide commandant Lefebvre, vont rapidement chasser l'officier français, qui entraîne avec lui Barnabé, un escroc au cœur tendre. Morsac s'est pourtant lié d'amitié avec un enfant, Reia, le prince de l'île. Ce dernier voit en lui le libérateur de son peuple. Catherine et Marcello forment un couple uni. Leur fille, Camille, âgée de neuf mois, représente pour eux l'axe autour duquel tourne le monde. Catherine et Marcello s'avouent heureux et ne voient pas plus loin que le bout de leur bonheur. Mais un jour, ce qui n'arrive qu'aux autres s'abat sur eux : la petite Camille meurt. Catherine et Marcello refusent d'accepter ce coup du sort : ils rompent avec leur vie passée, leurs amis, leurs proches et s'enferment dans leur appartement. Là, ils vivent repliés sur eux-mêmes, traversant des périodes d'incompréhension. Marcello abandonne son métier ; Catherine, lorsqu'elle sort, passe ses journées à vanter les mérites de sa fille aux mères de famille qui promènent leurs enfants dans des parcs… Et puis un soir, las de ce décor qui ne change jamais, Catherine et Marcello décident de partir loin, à l'aventure. Betty (Marie Trintignant), a young alcoholic woman, is caught cold while cheating on her bourgeois husband. Wasting no time, he and his family arrange a quick divorce settlement, ousting her from home and keeping her away from the two children the couple have. One night she ends up in a restaurant called Le Trou (The Hole), where she meets Laure (Stéphane Audran), an older woman, an alcoholic herself. Laure decides to take care of Betty after hearing the heart-breaking stories of her being a victim of a rich and ruthless society. Betty receives care and friendship from Laure, who's in a relationship with Mario (Jean-Francois Garreaud), the restaurant's owner. The envy toward Laure for Mario grows each day and will drive Betty to artfully contrive the means to conquer her new friend's lover. Laure realizes she has made a mistake by trusting her new friend and things soon begin to tremble between them. Betty's true colors are now visible and she sees her life at a point of no return, as she selfishly stomped on the last chance she had been given to be a better person.
