Synopsis
In Santo Domingo the experienced seaman Jacques Cournot is asked for advice by a certain Mr Hendrix who wishes to purchase a sailing boat. Cournot recommends to buy the ship in question. Subsequently Mr Hendrix negotiates the price with Mrs Osborne, the owner of the "Dragoon". Little later, after corpses of murdered strangers are found on the beach, Cournot finds himself interrogated by police because Mr Hendrix and the "Dragoon" have disappeared while Mrs Osborne pretends to be unaware of any deal.Actors

The French gangster Abel Davos is on the run from the police. He has been tried in absentia and sentenced to death. He flees to Italy together with his wife Thérèse and their two children. He performs a successful holdup in Milano with his accomplice Raymond, but chased by the police the two decide to return to France. Entering France on a seemingly deserted beach, the small group is surprised by two customs officers and end up in a gunfight, where Thérèse and Raymond are killed. Left alone with the children, Abel calls his friends Riton and Fargier in Paris to come and pick him up in Nice. Unable to travel to Nice, they send a man named Éric Stark, who works as an ambulance driver. Éric lets Abel hide in his attic and the two men become friends.

The film starts with the murder of District Attorney Vargas in Palermo, amongst a climate of demonstrations, strikes and political tension between the Left and the government. The subsequent investigation failing, the police assign the protagonist Inspector Rogas (Lino Ventura) to solve the case. While he is starting his investigation, two judges are killed. All victims turn out to have worked together on several cases. After Rogas discovers evidence of corruption surrounding the three government officials, he is encouraged by superiors "not to forage after gossip," but to trail the "crazy lunatic who for no reason whatever is going about murdering judges." This near admission of guilt drives Rogas to seek out three men wrongfully convicted by the murdered judges. He is joined by a journalist friend working for a far-left newspaper, Cusan.

Dan Layton, un « as » du contre-espionnage français, est délégué à Malaga sur la piste d'Hakim Gregory, redoutable espion qui a démantelé un réseau français. À cause d'elle, Layton tombe entre les mains de Gregory, mais est finalement délivré par Petula et une escouade d'agents français. Layton réussit à abattre Gregory et, mission accomplie, part filer le parfait amour avec Marion.
