False Witness (also known as The Diplomat in the UK and US) is an Australian television mini-series produced by Screentime Australia for the Australian subscription television channel UK.TV. Commissioned as part of its required drama output, UK.TV has previously made Make or Break and Supernova.

The two-part mini-series premiered in Australia on both UK.TV and BBC HD on 11 and 12 January 2009.

Synopsis

Première Partie : Sergei Krousov, un trafiquant de drogue donne la clé d'une valise à bombe nucléaire à Ian Porter, un diplomate britannique. De l'héroïne est trouvée dans un conteneur lui appartenant. Scotland Yard accuse Ian Porter de collaboration avec la mafia russe. Il est arrêté. Krousov fait des menaces de mort contre Pipa, l'épouse du diplomate. Julie Hales décide alors d'assurer la protection de Porter et de son ex-femme en échange de son témoignage contre Krousov. Scotland Yard envoie les époux Porter en détention préventive en Australie. Mais elle va découvrir que ce dernier est un agent du MI-6 et doute fortement de la nature de son engagement. Pipa est tuée.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), while vacationing, is alerted by the IMF that someone has used his identity to assist Russian bio-chemical expert Dr. Vladimir Nekhorvich (Rade Serbedzija) of Biocyte Pharmaceuticals to enter the United States, only to kill him in a subsequent plane crash. Nekhorvich, an old friend of Ethan, had forewarned the IMF of his arrival, planning to deliver a new bioweapon, Chimera, and its cure, Bellerophon, both of which he was forced to develop by Biocyte, into the IMF's hands. With his death, IMF is worried that the virus is out in the open, believing that rogue IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott) is responsible. IMF assigns Ethan to recover it. Ethan is told that he can use two members of his team to help him, but the third person to help him must be Nyah Nordoff-Hall (Thandie Newton), a professional thief presently operating in Seville, Spain, as she will be able to get close to Ambrose, being an ex-girlfriend.

An Indonesian fishing boat abandons a group of Iraqi and Cambodian men on a remote part of the Western Australian coast in 1990. Told there is a bus over the dunes, the men are abandoned to a desert the size of Poland. While most are quickly rounded up, three men with little in common but their history of misfortune elude capture and begin an epic but confused journey drawn on by their hopes amplified by the empty desert.
