The Divine Comedy (A Divina Comédia) is a 1991 Portuguese drama film directed by Manoel de Oliveira. It was screened in competition at the 1991 Venice Film Festival, in which it won the Special Jury Prize.

Synopsis

Dans un asile d'aliénés, loin de la Divine Comédie de Dante, des personnes se croisent, hallucinées ou lucides, rejouant des textes littéraires ou philosophiques. Certains se prennent pour des figures bibliques, Adam et Ève, Jésus, Lazare, Marie, d'autres pour des personnages de romans, Raskolnikov, Ivan Karamazov, ou encore Frédéric Nietzsche... Oliveira développe là une réflexion sur le temps présent et ses valeurs.

The journey of Michael Padovic, a professor from the U.S.A, who arrives with his wife, Helene, at a Portuguese convent where he expects to find the documents needed to prove his theory: Shakespeare was born in Spain, not in England, and was Jewish. It is set in July 2001. Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira), a university teacher, takes her little daughter Maria Joana on a cruise from their home country of Portugal to Bombay, India, to see Rosa's husband who is an airplane pilot. Her motive is to visit the birthplaces of civilisation. At each port, a new person boards the ship. A famous businesswoman (Catherine Deneuve) boards in France, a famous model (Stefania Sandrelli) in Italy, and a famous actress (Irene Papas) in Athens. The captain of the ship (John Malkovich) invites the three distinguished women to dinner at his table, and they all speak in their own languages for the better part of the conversation. Later in the movie, Maria Joana and Rosa Maria are also invited to his table, where the captain presents the child with a gift.
