Synopsis
« Voici donc les anciens soldats d' Os Fuzis, à Rio de Janeiro devenus, à la fin des années soixante-dix, ouvriers sur le gigantesque chantier du métro carioca. Pedro porte toujours un uniforme quelconque, car, dit-il, aujourd'hui un homme sans uniforme ne vaut rien . José meurt dans un accident, car il était un bon ouvrier, il a grimpé sur les échafaudages sans ceinture de sécurité pour ne pas retarder le travail, disent ses camarades. À Milagres, un village du Nordeste brésilien, un groupe de paysans affamés risquent de mettre à sac le magasin d'un notable. Un détachement de soldats est envoyé afin de prévenir d'éventuels troubles. Pour conjurer le mauvais sort, d'autres villageois se livrent, sous la direction d'un prêtre, à des rites superstitieux. Par ailleurs, un soldat, en état d'ébriété, commet un homicide en essayant de ramener de l'ordre dans un groupe de paysans en colère. Gaúcho, un conducteur de camion, s'insurge, pour sa part, contre l'attitude d'un villageois acceptant passivement le décès de sa fille, morte d'inanition. Il incite aussi les paysans à la révolte. Mais, la moindre tentative de sédition sera sévèrement réprimée.

Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) is a 51-year-old advertising executive and head of sales for Sports America, a major sports magazine. Based on a true story, the film depicts a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners' strike in 1984, at the outset of what would become the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign. The National Union of Mineworkers was reluctant to accept the group's support due to the union's public relations' worries about being openly associated with a gay group, so the activists instead decided to take their donations directly to Onllwyn, a small mining village in Wales, resulting in an alliance between the two communities. The alliance was unlike any seen before and was ultimately successful.

In the Arizona desert, truck driver Martin "Rubber Duck" Penwald is passed by a woman in a Jaguar E-Type, which leads to an encounter with a sheriff's deputy. Proceeding on his way, Rubber Duck runs into fellow truck drivers Pig Pen/Love Machine and Spider Mike, when another "trucker" informs them over the C.B. that they are okay to increase their speed. The "trucker" turns out to be cold county Sheriff "Dirty Lyle" Wallace, a long-time nemesis of the Duck, who extorts them for $70 each.
