The Fan is a 1949 American drama film directed by Otto Preminger. The screenplay by Dorothy Parker, Walter Reisch, and Ross Evans is based on the 1892 play Lady Windermere's Fan by Oscar Wilde. The play had been filmed several times before, with a 1916 silent film, a later adaptation by Ernst Lubitsch in 1925 as well as versions in Spanish and Chinese.
Synopsis
A Londres, juste après la guerre, Mrs Erlynne, une vieille dame assiste à la mise aux enchères d'un éventail lui ayant appartenu. Souhaitant le récupérer, elle va demander de l'aide à une ancienne relation, Lord Darlington. Mais qui est donc la mystérieuse Mrs Erlynne ? Grâce à plusieurs flash-backs, nous revivons le drame qui s'est joué quelques années plus tôt.Actors

Dans un Londres dévasté par les bombardements de l'après-guerre, une vieille dame, Mrs. Erlynne, assiste à la mise aux enchères d'un éventail lui ayant appartenu. Elle souhaiterait le récupérer : le commissaire-priseur lui accorde un délai de vingt-quatre heures pour établir la preuve de ses allégations. Mrs. Erlynne se rend donc au domicile d'une de ses anciennes relations, Lord Darlington. À l'aide de quatre flash-back, le film reconstitue le passé des époux Windermere, de Lord Darlington, de Lord Lorton et de Mrs. Erlynne et de leurs relations complexes. Au cours de son entretien avec Lord Darlington, Mrs. Erlynne lui révèle qu'elle est la mère de Lady Margaret Windermere. Elle avait sauvé sa fille d'une situation embarrassante au cours de laquelle celle-ci risquait d'être compromise. En signe de gratitude, Lady Windermere lui légua son éventail. Extrêmement bouleversé par ce qu'il apprend, Darlington invite Mrs. Erlynne à dîner.

Set in the early 1900s in the fictional Catfish Row section of Charleston, South Carolina, which serves as home to a black fishing community, the story focuses on the titular characters, crippled beggar Porgy, who travels about in a goat-drawn cart, and the drug-addicted Bess, who lives with stevedore Crown, the local bully. While high on cocaine supplied by Sportin' Life, Crown kills Robbins after the latter vanquishes him in a craps game; Bess urges Crown to flee. Sportin' Life suggests she accompany him to New York City, an offer Bess declines. She seeks refuge with her neighbors, all of whom refuse to help her. Porgy finally agrees to let her stay with him.

When police officer Moe Finkelstein Milton Berle and his colleague Officer Salomon are ordered to serve as bodyguards to German consul Karl Baumer (Otto Preminger) by the mayor of New York City, Finkelstein turns in his badge, convinced he has to quit the service because the man is a Nazi. Capt. In 1456, Charles VII (Richard Widmark), experiences dreams in which he is visited by Joan of Arc (Jean Seberg), the former commander of his army, burned at the stake as a heretic twenty-five years earlier. In the dream he tells Joan that her case was retried and her sentence annulled. He recalls how she entered his life as a simple, seventeen-year-old peasant girl; how she heard the voices of Saints Catherine and Margaret telling her that she would lead the French army against the English at the siege of Orléans and be responsible for having the Dauphin crowned king at Rheims cathedral. When Joan arrives at the Dauphin's palace at Chinon she discovers that he is a childish weakling with no interest in fighting. After being tested by the members of the court, who conclude that she is mad, Joan imbues the Dauphin with her belief and fervor and he gives her command of the army.

The Frake family is getting ready for the Iowa State Fair - each with their own hopes for the trip ("Our State Fair"). Daughter Margy (Jeanne Crain) is in a melancholy mood as she packs for the fair, singing "It Might As Well Be Spring". Margy muses about how the Fair will at least give her a break from seeing and doing the same old things every day on the farm. Father Abel (Charles Winninger) tends to his pig Blue Boy and bets his neighbor Dave Miller (Percy Kilbride) five dollars that the pig will win at the fair, and that the Frake family will all have a good time at the fair with no bad experiences. Mother Melissa (Fay Bainter) is preparing pickles and mincemeat to enter in the cooking competition. The mincemeat recipe calls for brandy, but Melissa objects to adding it because she doesn't believe in cooking with alcohol, even though Abel disagrees and thinks the brandy is essential to the recipe. When Melissa goes to the phone, Abel secretly puts some brandy in the mincemeat. The phone call is for son Wayne (Dick Haymes), whose girlfriend Eleanor is calling to tell him that she cannot go to the fair with him because her mother has been ill. Melissa comes back from the phone to her mincemeat and, not knowing Abel already added brandy, adds even more. Harry, Margy's fiance, tells her he can't go to the fair with her because he has to take care of his cows. He describes the new modern farm he wants to have after they are married, with a farmhouse made out of prefabricated plastic with linoleum floors throughout. Margy, who thinks old houses are charming, is not enthusiastic about Harry's ideas or about Harry himself.
