Synopsis
Vétéran de la Guerre de Corée, de retour à Washington après deux ans de captivité dans un camp chinois et une période d'hospitalisation, Alan Eaton pense réintégrer l'institut de sondages qu'il a créé avec son associé Clark Baker. Il apprend sa mort accidentelle, peu après avoir vendu l'entreprise à Jim McGinnis. Alan rencontre un ancien client, le sénateur Walder, lequel lui laisse entendre que l'institut réalise désormais des sondages truqués afin d'influencer des choix électoraux, et lui suggère de reprendre son poste pour démasquer McGinnis. Il est aidé par la secrétaire de ce dernier, Lorraine Dennis.Actors

In England, Professor Harrington (Maurice Denham) visits his rival, Dr. Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis). Harrington promises to cancel an investigation of Karswell's involvement in Satanism if Karswell will rescind a threat he has made against Harrington. After learning that a parchment given to Harrington has disintegrated, Karswell glances at the clock and ushers Harrington out, promising to do all that he can. As Harrington drives home, a gigantic demon materialises in the woods and pursues him. Losing control of the car, Harrington crashes into an electrical pole and is electrocuted by falling high tension lines.

In 1856, ambitious freight company and store owner Logan Stuart (Dana Andrews) agrees to escort Lucy Overmire (Susan Hayward) home to the settlement of Jacksonville, Oregon, along with his latest shipment. Lucy is engaged to Logan's best friend, George Camrose (Brian Donlevy). The night before they depart, however, Logan has to defend himself from a sneak attack in his hotel room; though it is too dark to be sure, he believes his assailant is Honey Bragg (Ward Bond). Later, he explains to Susan that he once saw Bragg leaving the vicinity of two murdered miners. Despite Logan's unwillingness to accuse Bragg (since he did not actually witness the crime), Bragg apparently wants to take no chances.

John Keller, l'inventeur d'un nouvel avion révolutionnaire, se rend à l'usine de Radex Airplane Factory en Californie en compagnie de Nick Carter, qui voyage sous le nom de Robert Chalmers, assistant du directeur de l'usine Hiram Streeter. Une fois en vol, le pilote feint une panne de moteur et atterrit. Il a en fait rendez-vous avec un groupe d'espions qui veulent voler les plans de Keller. Nick déjoue leur plan et, avec l'aide de l'hôtesse Lou Farnsby, pilote l'avion et ses passagers jusqu'en Californie. À l'usine Radex, Streeter explique à Nick que des plans secrets ont été volés, malgré une sécurité renforcée. L'avenir de l'usine est lié au développement de l'avion de Keller et c'est pour enquêter sur ces vols que Streeter a fait venir Nick Carter. La liste de suspects de Nick inclut Lou, et il demande à Streeter de l'employer à l'infirmerie. Nick est aidé dans son enquête par Bartholomew, un détective amateur. Lorsqu'un sabotage détruit le nouvel avion lors d'un vol d'essai, Nick commence à suspecter Keller, mais ce dernier est assassiné. Quand Nick attrape un des patients du Dr Frankton avec des photos des plans dans ses bandages, Frankton réalise qu'il est sur le point d'être arrêté et prend Lou en otage. Frankton s'enfuit par bateau de l'usine, avec Nick et à sa poursuite en avion. Finalement, Bartholomew et la police du port arrivent pour arrêter les espions.

Joe Stefanos (Paul Valentine) arrives at small, out-of-the-way Bridgeport, California, in search of Jeff Bailey (Mitchum). Jeff is away, off on a picnic with local girl Ann Miller (Virginia Huston). On the eve of the French Revolution, Lucie Manette (Elizabeth Allan) is informed that her father (Henry B.
