The film chronicles the story of two tanks that get lost behind enemy lines in the beginning of the Korean War. Facing the crew is an inexperienced commander, the mounting tension between a motley assortment of soldiers, and the general confusion of the "forgotten war" itself.
Synopsis
In October 1950, during a decimating North Korean Army assault, a U.S. Army tank platoon retreats. The remaining two tanks become lost behind enemy lines. Corporal William Byrne, an idealistic, God-fearing young enlistee, becomes the platoon commander after the platoon sergeant dies. Fighting against the unseen enemy and waning esprit de corps, the tanks crisscross the unfamiliar Korean landscape. Death, dissension, and a wounded North Korean PoW test the wills of Cpl. Byrne and crews. Meanwhile, struggling to maintain his faith, Cpl. Byrne escapes the war by remembering his wife and the delusions of his morphine-medicated mind.Actors

The film follows a day in the life of Los Angeles Police Department officer, Jake Hoyt, who is scheduled to be evaluated by Detective Alonzo Harris, a highly decorated LAPD narcotics officer. In Alonzo's car, the officer sees teenage Mara Salvatrucha gang members dealing drugs in a park. Alonzo confiscates the drugs and tells Jake to take a hit of the marijuana. Jake refuses, but Alonzo puts a gun to his head and says that Jake's failure to use drugs could get him killed by a street dealer.

The central character of the film is Harry Melchior, played by Heino Ferch and based on the real tunneler, Hasso Herschel. Despite being imprisoned for several years for his role in the June 1953 uprising in East Germany, Melchior competes for and wins the national swimming championship in 1961. With the aid of a false passport and disguise, Harry succeeds in fleeing to West Berlin. His best friend, Matthis (played by Sebastian Koch) manages to escape through the underground sewer, but Matthis's pregnant wife Carola (played by Claudia Michelsen) was not so lucky and remained in East Berlin.

Vulcanologist Peter Slater Dan Cortese, studying elevated steam-activity on Angel Mountain, finds evidence of an impending eruption such as many animals lying dead for no apparent reason. His ex-girlfriend Kelly Adams, a resident of the eponymous town, is told about his findings—which unfortunately, happen to be during the peak tourist season. Kelly tries in vain to warn the townsfolk and council of the danger, but they fail to heed and evacuate—until the mountain shows ashfall. After several attempts to find a solution, Peter declares that the lava is soon going to come down like "a liquid avalanche" which gives Kelly the idea (due to Angel Mountain and some others nearby being snowcapped) of using a snow avalanche to stop the lava flow—at which Peter balks, until Kelly tells him of the lack of other albernatives. The two then set out skiing to planting explosives to set off a controlled avalanche to stop the flow—but in attempting to escape the resulting avalanche Peter gets buried and Kelly makes it into town to witness the result, the snow avalanche blocking off (and solidifying) the lava-flow. At that point, Peter manages to dig himself out and return to town, after which he and Kelly rekindle their romance.
