In a noisy print shop, a disgraced police detective named Hofmeister (Karl Meixner) escapes from pursuing criminals' attacks. Hofmeister telephones his former superior Inspector Karl Lohmann (Otto Wernicke) and explains frantically that he has discovered a huge criminal conspiracy. Before he can disclose the identity of responsible criminal, the lights go out, shots are fired, and Hofmeister becomes mad. Hofmeister vanishes only to be found later singing every time he feels watched, and he is institutionalized at Professor Baum's asylum.

The young Count Georg Wolkersheim (Willy Fritsch) is sent to the Congress of Vienna to represent the interests of his country, Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz. Tensions arise between the count, his wife Melanie (Maria Holst), and their two chamberlains (Hans Moser and Theo Lingen), and when the four of them attend a court ball, Melanie leaves Georg, assumes the identity of a famous actress, and attracts the affections of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (Fred Liewehr). Georg quits the ball and returns to his lodgings to wait for his wife. Meanwhile, the two servants plot to further inflame Georg's jealousy by posing as Ludwig to commission a portrait of Melanie from the famous artist Moritz Daffinger (Egon von Jordan). The next day, however, Georg and Daffinger expose the servants' ruse, Ludwig reveals to Melanie that he has discovered her true identity, and all is forgiven.

Lord Arthur Cavershoot consacre sa vie avec un dévouement complet à ses travaux sur Napoléon Bonaparte. Mais il ne néglige pas son épouse qui porte justement le nom de Josephine. Lorsque Cavershoot se rend à Paris pour assister à une conférence de spécialistes de Napoléon, il fait la connaissance de Madeleine, une jeune danseuse. À cause d'une série de circonstances malheureuses, le Daily Mail publie une photo où ils sont tous les deux et titre "Lord Cavershoot montre sa charmante fille de la nuit parisienne". Pour échapper à la colère de sa femme et éviter la suspicion de l'infidélité, Cavershoot présente la jeune femme en Angleterre comme sa fille illégitime. Mais contrairement à ce qu'il pensait, Lady Cavershoot accueille Madeleine cordialement, ce qui ne lui plaît pas du tout. En fin de compte, l'amateur de Napoléon connaît son Waterloo et va avec Josephine à Paris afin d'adopter réellement Madeleine comme leur fille.
