The Hottest State is a 2006 drama film directed and written by Ethan Hawke, which he based on the novel of the same name that he had written and published ten years earlier, in 1996. The film debuted at the Venice Film Festival on September 2, 2006, and received a limited theatrical release in the United States on August 24, 2007. It ran for 5 weeks and grossed $137,341 internationally. The film was subsequently issued on DVD in December 2007.

Synopsis

The film tells the story of a 20-year-old actor William (Mark Webber) who falls in love for the first time with an aspiring singer, Sarah (Catalina Sandino Moreno). As their love blossoms and languishes, young William reexamines himself and his relationship with his mother Jesse (Laura Linney) and estranged father Vince (Hawke himself).

Jude Keffy-Horn (Asa Butterfield) is a teenage boy who lives in Vermont with his adoptive mother, Harriet (Julianne Nicholson), and sister, Prudence (Nadia Alexander). When he finds out that Eliza, who is also the daughter of Les' girlfriend, Di (Emily Mortimer), is pregnant with the child of deceased Teddy after an encounter on the night Teddy died, he and Johnny, along with Les, become Eliza's rock as she struggles through pregnancy so early on in life, and the three become a family of sorts, in hopes to raise the child together. Meanwhile, Di struggles with her relationship with Les, and Harriet struggles with the prospect of her growing children.

Lukas (Mark Webber) is a young man who works as a tollbooth operator. He does not have much of a social life and spends much of his free time visiting his catatonic mother in the hospital.
