Add to a movie listThe Isle of Lost Ships is a 1923 American silent adventure/melodrama film directed and produced by Maurice Tourneur and distributed by Associated First National Pictures. The film is based on Crittenden Marriott's novel The Isle of Dead Ships c.1909. The story was re-filmed in 1929 by director Irvin Willat.
Tourneur himself made a different story with similar theme called The Ship of Lost Men (1929) which had a young German actress, Marlene Dietrich, in the cast.
The 1923 film has long since been thought to be lost.
Synopsis
Jackson, un policier, ramène Frank Howard d'Amérique du Sud pour qu'il soit jugé pour meurtre à New York lorsque leur navire fait naufrage. Tous les passagers arrivent à évacuer l'épave sauf Jackson, Howard, et Dorothy Fairfax, une riche américaine. L'épave dérive dans la mer des Sargasses, et se retrouve avec une flotte d'autres épaves, où habitent une cinquantaine de personnes, avec à leur tête Peter Forbes. Pour sauver Dorothy d'un mariage avec ce dernier, Frank se bat avec lui, et après avoir gagné épouse Dorothy, lors d'un mariage blanc. Frank, grâce à son expérience, arrive à équiper un sous-marin et à s'enfuir avec Dorothy. Il gagne son amour et réussit à prouver son innocence.Actors

On a volcanic island near the kingdom of Hetvia rules Count Dakkar, a benevolent leader and scientist who has eliminated class distinction among the island's inhabitants. Dakkar, his daughter Sonia and her fiance, engineer Nicolai Roget have designed a submarine which Roget pilots on its initial voyage just before the island is overrun by Baron Falon, despotic ruler of Hetvia. Falon sets out after Roget in a second submarine and the two craft, diving to the ocean's floor, discover a strange land populated by dragons, giant squid and an eerie undiscovered humanoid race.

The film is a comedy that centers on a disgruntled 18th century Bostonian, played by Errol, who while wishing that he was a pirate, dons the clothes and play-acts the part. He is mistaken for the real pirate, Dixie Bull (played by Walter Law) whom Errol, of course, bumps into later in the film. More importantly, Errol "slays" the villain and puts his foot upon the pirate's head. This is more than enough and he heads back home to his unappreciated wife, played by Dorothy Gish.

The film tells of a sea captain's maniacal quest for revenge on a great white whale who has bitten off his leg. Ahab meets and falls in love with the daughter of the local minister, after disembarking in New Bedford. She falls in love with Barrymore and is heartbroken when he leaves on another voyage. During his next voyage, Ahab loses his leg to a large white whale. When he returns to New Bedford, he mistakenly believes that the woman he loves no longer wants to see him due to his disfigurement. He vows revenge against the whale, and to kill it or be killed in the process, and returns to sea.
