En septembre 1894, le service de renseignement français prend connaissance d'un incident d'espionnage à Paris. Des secrets militaires auraient été transmis à l'attaché militaire allemand à Paris, Maximilian von Schwartzkoppen. « Dans l'intérêt de l'armée », dit-on, le ministre de la Guerre Auguste Mercier doit rapidement trouver un coupable. Le 15 octobre de la même année, Alfred Dreyfus, capitaine au sein de l'état-major, d'origine juive, né en Alsace, jusqu'alors totalement innocent, est arrêté sur la base d'éléments de preuve légèrement construits. L'agitation antisémite dans la presse, l'armée et la politique crée rapidement un chaudron contre le traître présumé à Paris dans les années 1890.

The melodrama, film begins with a young Afro-German girl being left at the doorsteps of the Rose family—white middle-class Germans—assembled for a birthday party. Initially, most family members treat the young girl with relatively welcome arms as they believe she is only giving a performance as a birthday surprise from an aunt. The family later discovers a suitcase that was left on the doorsteps and realize that the young girl, Toxi, has in fact been abandoned. Once the family learns that Toxi has been abandoned there is a shift in feelings regarding their acceptance of her; the possibility of the girl spending more time at the home than was expected forces members of the family to confront their racism.

Danny Dunkleman (Strathairn) is a Jewish humanist and a lawyer who works for the court system in Canada. In a rural village, the tyrannical Jonas Lauretz intimidates his family, mistress and neighbours. After he disappears one night, it is widely believed that his eldest daughter, Silvelie, has murdered him. A new investigating judge arrives in the village, he falls in love with Silvelie. He becomes torn between his love for her and his duty to investigate the potential crime. Eventually it emerges that it was not Silvelie who murdered Jonas Lauretz but the village innkeeper Bündner. He is forgiven by everyone because they all shared his desire to murder him.
