The film was based on a hit 1940 Broadway play of the same name written by James Thurber and Elliott Nugent. The screenplay was written by Stephen Morehouse Avery, Julius J. Epstein, and Philip G. Epstein, based on Nugent and Thurber's play. The film was also directed by Elliott Nugent.
Synopsis
Tommy Turner (Henry Fonda) is an English teacher at football-crazed Midwestern University. Although he is uninvolved with the politics of the day, Tommy suddenly finds himself the center of a free-speech debate on campus. An editorial in a student magazine praises him for planning to read Bartolomeo Vanzetti's sentencing statement to his class as an example of eloquent composition, even in broken English composed by a non-professional.Actors

Gerald Fitzgerald, un Américain, épouse Lisa Della Robbia, une belle Italienne chanteuse d'opéra. Ils vivent une belle romance jusqu'à ce qu'elle reprenne son travail. Gerald accompagne Lisa en tournée, mais il se trouve relégué à cette situation d'accompagnateur. Gerald revient finalement aux États-Unis, Lisa lui ayant promis de le rejoindre après sa tournée en Scandinavie. Lisa repousse la date de son retour et Gerald perd patience et commence une procédure de divorce. Avant même que Lisa ait accepté le divorce, il renoue une relation avec Flora Preston. Mais un jour ils sont surpris par le retour de Lisa, qui jure qu'elle aussi a un amant qu'elle a l'intention d'épouser. Lorsque Gerald l'accuse de n'avoir aucune idée de ce qu'est d'être une épouse, de colère elle accepte le divorce, alors qu'elle l'aime encore et qu'elle n'a en réalité pas d'amant. Lisa insiste pour que Flora soit présente alors qu'ils discutent des aspects financiers du divorce et invite le couple à assister à son spectacle à l'opéra et à la rejoindre pour dîner ensuite. Finalement Gerald et Lisa se réconcilient et décident de partir en Amérique du Sud.

Vincent Day (Warren William) is a prosecutor who is on the fast track to success. When a man he zealously prosecuted all the way to the electric chair is found to have been innocent, he becomes distressed and quits his job. At the suggestion of a friendly bartender, he decides to switch teams and become a defense attorney specializing in the representation of gangsters and other unsavory people. He will use any tactic to get his clients acquitted, up to and including drinking a slow-acting poison from a bottle of evidence to prove that the substance isn't lethal. The jury acquits the man not knowing that immediately after, Day rushes into a Mob doctor's office for a pre-arranged stomach pump.

In London in 1750, renowned English actor David Garrick announces onstage that he has been invited to Paris to work with the prestigious Comédie-Française. A person in the audience jeers that the French want him to teach them how to act. The playwright Beaumarchais (Lionel Atwill) returns to the Comédie-Française and attributes the remark to Garrick himself. The outraged French actors, led by their president, Picard (Melville Cooper), decide to make him an object of public ridicule. They take over a wayside inn where he will be staying, and Beaumarchais devises a plot intended to humiliate Garrick by frightening him into returning to England.
