The Measure of a Man (French: La Loi du marché) is a 2015 French drama film directed by Stéphane Brizé. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Vincent Lindon won the award for Best Actor and the film won a commendation awarded by the Ecumenical Jury.

Synopsis

Thierry a married factory worker who has a disabled child. At the age of 51, he lands a new job as a security guard in a supermarket, after one-and-half years of unemployment. He tries to make ends meet in working-class France.

Léo travaille en usine depuis l'âge de seize ans. Un jour, son chef d'atelier l'affecte sur une machine sur laquelle Léo n'avait pas encore travaillé, en lui ordonnant de bien lire les consignes de sécurité avant de l'utiliser. Problème : le chef ignore tout du handicap de Léo pour lequel il s'est toujours tu, il ne sait pas lire. Du coup, ne pouvant comprendre les instructions écrites de la nouvelle machine, Léo se blesse et se retrouve avec deux doigts sectionnés. Suite à un grave accident de sport dans une piscine, Ben, devenu tétraplégique incomplet, arrive dans un centre de rééducation. Il fait la rencontre d'autres handicapés (tétraplégiques, paraplégiques, traumatisés crâniens), tous victimes d'accidents, ainsi qu'un handicapé depuis sa petite enfance. Entre impuissance, désespoir et résignation, dans la lutte quotidienne pour réapprendre à bouger un doigt ou tenir une fourchette, quelques-uns retrouvent lentement un peu de mobilité tandis que d'autres reçoivent le verdict du handicap à vie. Malgré tout, l'espoir et l'amitié les aident à supporter leurs difficultés.

The film tells the story of Simon Calmat (Vincent Lindon), a French swimming coach who is divorcing his wife Marion (Audrey Dana). Simon tries to help a young Iraqi-Kurd immigrant, Bilal Kayani (Firat Ayverdi), whose dream is to cross the English Channel from Calais in France to the United Kingdom by any means possible to be reunited with his girlfriend Mina (Derya Ayverdi). Meanwhile, Mina's father strongly opposes Bilal's plans as he wants to marry his daughter to her cousin who owns a restaurant. After being caught with other immigrants and returned to France, Simon gives him temporary refuge at his home after the young Bilal, nicknamed "Bazda" (runner, for his athletic abilities and love of football and Manchester United in particular) registers for swimming lessons, intending to train to be able to swim across the Channel. After police search Simon's apartment, Bilal goes on a final attempt and drowns 800 meters from the English coast while hiding from the coastguard. Simon then travels to inform Mina.

Romain est un jeune adolescent atteint depuis sa naissance de Xeroderma pigmentosum, une maladie génétique extrêmement rare qui le contraint notamment à rester à l'abri de la lumière du jour en raison des rayons ultraviolets qui provoquent des dommages à l'ADN que ses cellules ne peuvent naturellement réparer, entrainant irrémédiablement des cancers cutanés multiples. Il est suivi par le dermatologue David Assoland avec lequel il a noué au cours des années une relation d'autant plus filiale qu'il vit seul avec sa mère. David cependant, après une longue carrière au CHU de Bayonne obtient enfin un poste convoité depuis de nombreuses années à l'Organisation mondiale de la santé à Genève. Très attaché à cet enfant, bien que relativement distant de sa propre famille, il ne sait ni ne réussit à lui dire qu'il va devoir partir. Son successeur à la tête du service est une femme, Carlotta Granié, avec laquelle il entretient des rapports conflictuels, ne réussissant pas à passer la main.
