Add to a movie listThe Member of the Wedding is a 1952 drama directed by Fred Zinnemann, starring Ethel Waters and Julie Harris. The story is set in a small Southern town. Frankie Addams is an awkward, moody twelve-year-old girl whose only friends are her young cousin John Henry and her black housekeeper Berenice. Co-starring as a drunken soldier who tries to take advantage of the vulnerable Frankie is former child actor Dick Moore, making his last film appearance.
Later versions of McCuller's play were done for television, with Claudia McNeil playing Berenice in 1958, then Pearl Bailey performing the part in 1982. Julie Harris was nominated for an Academy Award® for her performance, but lost to Shirley Booth, who won for Come Back, Little Sheba (1952).
Synopsis
Feeling rejected when her older brother goes off on his honeymoon without inviting her along, Frankie (Julie Harris) runs away from her middle-class southern home. She endures several other adolescent traumas, not least of which is the sudden death of her bespectacled young cousin John Henry (Brandon De Wilde). With the help of warmhearted housekeeper Berenice Sadie Brown (Ethel Waters), Frankie eventually makes an awkward transition to young womanhood.Actors

Dans une petite ville de Géorgie, la jeune Frankie Addams, véritable garçon manqué de douze ans, est inquiète de se sentir vivre et considérer en marge du monde par sa communauté. Son attitude, ses opinions, ses faits et gestes font d'elle un paria parmi les membres étroits d'esprit de sa communauté. Elle peut toutefois compter sur son seul ami, son voisin John Henry, même si elle fait mine de ne point le considérer comme tel. Son père, veuf, accaparé par la direction sa petite entreprise, laisse Frankie à la garde de Berenice Sadie Brown, la gouvernante, qui est également chargée de soigner son propre frère adoptif, Honey Camden, en qui se résume toute sa famille. Frankie voit en grande partie les conseils de Berenice comme les élucubrations un peu folles d'une femme noire ignorante.

Cardinal Wolsey, the Lord Chancellor of England, summons Sir Thomas More to Hampton Court. King Henry VIII of England wishes to divorce his wife and marry Anne Boleyn. Saying that England needs a male heir to prevent another civil war, Wolsey chastises More for being the only member of the Privy Council to argue against him. When More states that the Pope will never grant a divorce, he is appalled by Wolsey's suggestion that they apply "pressure" on Church lands to force the issue. To Wolsey's fury, More responds, "No, Your Grace. I am not going to help you.

In Paris at the end of the First World War, Sylvia Suffolk and British officer Tony Clyde get married, shortly before Tony leaves for the front. The setting is a housing project apartment in New York City near the Brooklyn Bridge. Johnny Pope (Don Murray) is a soldier who returns from the Korean War, where a stay in a military hospital has left him secretly addicted to morphine. His emotional distance (and his tendency to stay out all night) alienates him from the apartment's other residents: Johnny's pregnant wife Celia (Eva Marie Saint) and his brother Polo (Anthony Franciosa). Celia is convinced that Johnny is having an affair, but of course the truth is something quite different.
