Simon Eskanazy is a thirty-year-old gay musician. Born into a Jewish family, he took great pains to accept his homosexuality, and to get his family (including his mother and his uncle, Salomon) to do the same. The latter, Uncle Salomon is a wealthy banker who offered him a deal: he'll give him 10 million francs and will bequeath his mansion to Simon only if Simon agrees to marry a woman. First reluctant, he met Rosalie Baumann, a Jewish singer known for singing in Yiddish, she is very observant, and her parents live in the United States. The movie starts off with a man, named Schlomo (Lionel Abelanski), running crazily through a forest, with his voice playing in the background, saying that he has seen the horror of the Nazis in a nearby town, and he must tell the others. Once he gets into town, he informs the rabbi, and together they run through the town and once they have got enough people together, they hold a town meeting. At first, many of the men do not believe the horrors they are being told, and many criticize Schlomo, for he is the town lunatic, and who could possibly believe him? But the rabbi believes him, and then they try to tackle the problem of the coming terrors. Amidst the pondering and the arguing, Schlomo suggests that they build a train, so they can escape by deporting themselves. Some of their members pretend to be Nazis in order to ostensibly transport them to a concentration camp, when in reality, they are going to Palestine via Russia. Thus the Train of Life is born.

Ramon Holgado est le chauffeur homme à tout faire de François Veber, important chef d'entreprise auprès duquel il s'est rendu indispensable par sa prévenance. Pour l'avoir toujours à disposition, Veber qui habite une vaste demeure de Neuilly avec son épouse Alexandra, hypocondriaque et capricieuse, a même installé Ramon et sa femme Carmen, qu'il emploie comme cuisinière, dans une aile de la maison. Ce qui ne manque pas parfois d'agacer cette dernière, qui rêve de retourner dans son Andalousie natale et a du mal à admettre que Ramon soit à ce point dévoué à son patron. Lequel entretient par ailleurs une maîtresse et n'hésite pas à mobiliser son chauffeur à toute heure du jour et de la nuit.
