Edward Środoń, an unemployed zootechnician from Mosty with a dark past and a growing drinking problem, tries to start over with a clean slate. He sets out to the Bieszczady Mountains to take up a job there at the local State Agricultural Farm. A twist of events makes him stop over for the night at the house of the Dziabas family. The initial feelings of mutual distrust between the guest and his hosts are softened with consecutive rounds of moonshine. Środoń slowly learns more about the family and its own problems. The unfolding story is intertwined with a parallel one which sees Środoń four years later, during martial law in Poland, taking part in a reenactment of the events that took place at the Dziabas house during his visit. The reenactment is led by Lieutenant Mróz from the Civic Militia who is slowly unveiling the truth about what happened four years before, at the same time being troubled by ghosts of his own past.

In summer 1945 Tadeusz Mazur, an officer of the Armia Krajowa and veteran of the Warsaw uprising, whose wife was raped and murdered by the Germans, moves to Masuria, a region in former German East Prussia, which became part of Poland as a result of the Potsdam Agreement after World War II. He visits Róża, a widow of a German Wehrmacht soldier whose death Tadeusz had witnessed, to hand over her husband’s possessions. Róża invites Tadeusz to stay at her farm to protect her against marauders and the brutal rapes she had previously experienced in the lawless atmosphere of postwar Masuria. From this partnership of purpose, slowly respect and love arises - a "frowned-upon relationship" attracting the "unwelcome attention of the new Polish nationalists as well as the notorious Soviet NKVD".

In Darkness is a dramatization of a factual rescue of Jewish refugees during World War II in German-occupied Polish city Lwów (Lemberg in German, L'viv in Ukrainian). For over a year, a Polish Catholic sewer maintenance worker and burglar, Leopold Socha – along with his friend and coworker Szczepek Wróblewski – hid and cared for a group of hunted Polish Jews who had escaped the massacres and deportations during the liquidation of the Lwów Ghetto, at first helping them in exchange for daily payment, but then continuing to do so long after the Jews' money had run out and aiding them had become ever more dangerous.
