Add to a movie listThe Murder of Mary Phagan, a 1988 two-part American TV miniseries written by Larry McMurtry, produced by George Stevens, Jr., directed by William "Billy" Hale, starring Jack Lemmon and Kevin Spacey, made by Orion Pictures Corporation, and distributed by National Broadcasting Company (NBC), is a dramatization of the story of Leo Frank, a factory manager charged and convicted with murdering a 13-year-old girl, a factory worker named Mary Phagan, in Atlanta, Georgia in 1913. The trial was sensational and controversial. After Frank's legal appeals had failed, the governor of Georgia in 1915 commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment, destroying his own career in the process. In 1915 Frank was kidnapped from prison and lynched by a small group of prominent men of Marietta, Georgia. In addition to Lemmon and Spacey, the film features Rebecca Miller, Peter Gallagher, Charles Dutton, Richard Jordan, Cynthia Nixon, Dylan Baker and William H. Macy. Lemmon noted during a publicity appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson shortly before the miniseries was broadcast that the cast was the best with which he had ever worked.
The film was shot in Richmond, Virginia with a running time of 251 minutes (over 4 hours), originally broadcast over two evenings.

The film is based on the true story of Betty Anne Waters, a single mother who works tirelessly to free her wrongfully convicted brother, Kenny. The story unfolds in flashbacks, and the film opens with the scene of the brutal 1980 murder of Katharina Brow in Ayer, Massachusetts. In many ways, Betty Anne's life revolves around her brother, who is now in jail for the murder. Despite Kenny's knack for getting in trouble, they have always been close. After the murder, Kenny is initially brought in for questioning by Sergeant Nancy Taylor (Melissa Leo), but released. November 1959. Perry Smith (Robert Blake) and "Dick" Hickock (Scott Wilson) concoct a plan to invade the home of the Clutter family, as Mr. Clutter supposedly keeps a large supply of cash on hand in a safe. While the two criminals feel their plan for the robbery is sound, it quickly unravels, resulting in the murders of Mr. and Mrs. Clutter and their two teenage children. The bodies are discovered the next day, and a police investigation is immediately launched. As the investigation builds, the two wanted men continue to elude law enforcement by heading south and crossing into Mexico; but, after a while, they return to the U.S. and decide to travel to Las Vegas to win some money at gambling. There, they are arrested for violating parole, being in possession of a stolen car, and passing bad checks.

Le 21 août 1910, un berger, débile léger, José María Grimaldos, surnommé El cepa (Le Cep) est aperçu pour la dernière fois sur la route menant de la commune de Osa de la Vega à Tresjuncos, dans la province de Cuenca (Castille-La Manche). La famille de celui-ci, très inquiète, alerte les autorités policières. Deux bergers, Gregorio Valero et León Sánchez, sont suspectés en septembre 1911. L'affaire est pourtant close, faute de preuves suffisantes. En 1913, le juge Isasa fait rouvrir le dossier : Gregorio et León sont incarcérés par la Guardia Civil. Soumis à des interrogatoires serrés suivis de tortures, les deux hommes finissent par avouer un meurtre imaginaire. Le procureur requiert la peine de mort. Mais, en mai 1918, un jury populaire inflige dix-huit ans de prison aux deux condamnés. Après onze ans d'emprisonnement, Gregorio et León sont libérés dans le cadre d'une loi d'amnistie générale (février 1924). Deux ans plus tard, au début de l'année 1926, José María Grimaldos est découvert vivant dans un village voisin. Au cours d'un processus judiciaire plutôt long, les condamnations seront annulées par la Cour suprême.
