It is one of relatively few films directed by Ismail Merchant who is better known as the producer in the Merchant Ivory partnership and addresses issues of Hindu subculture on the island of Trinidad.
The movie was the first film adaptation of a novel by Naipaul. It was filmed in Trinidad and was released in 2001, to lukewarm response. The screenplay is by Caryl Phillips. The film features performances by Om Puri and Aasif Mandvi, and original music by Zakir Hussain.
Synopsis
The semi-mystical novel by V. S. Naipaul moves between farce and acerbic social commentary on Trinidad, the country of his birth. The characters are mainly members of Trinidad's South Asian subculture and community. The protagonist is a frustrated writer of Indian descent (Ganesh Ramsumair) who rises from poverty on the back of his dubious talent as a 'mystic' masseur - a masseur (Pundit Ganesh) who can cure illnesses. In the end he becomes a successful colonial politician (G. Ramsay Muir).Actors

Lakhan Singh (Sonu Sood), a.k.a. Lucky, is the "king of the Australian underworld". Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is an author who hasn't been able to sell a book. He gets a job at a newspaper in San Juan, Puerto Rico. An arrogant wealthy capitalist named Raffaella (Mariangela Melato) is vacationing on a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea with friends—swimming, sunbathing, and talking incessantly about the virtues of her class and the worthlessness of the political left. Kumar (Siddharth) is a software engineer who lives in a joint family. All of the marriages in his family have been love marriages for generations. He, however, swears off girls and love because of bad experiences in his childhood and teenage. One day, Sanjana (Hansika Motwani) joins his office and he falls in love with her. Unable to convey his feelings, he seeks the help of Mokia (Santhanam), a man who earns a living by helping men impress their lovers. Mokia teaches him to be more assertive and flirtatious. He makes Kumar spread the rumour that Sanjana is seeing her boss, George (Ganesh Venkatraman). As a result, Sanjana stops spending time with George. George then asks her to be his girlfriend, coincidentally when Kumar was planning to confess his love for Sanjana. She accepts, leaving Kumar heartbroken. Mokia then intervenes and breaks up George and Sanjana. Sanjana and Kumar finally get together but Mokia tries to break them apart after he finds out it's his sister he has been helping Kumar with. Then, Kumar admits to Sanjana that he manipulated her feelings but then seeks her forgiveness. Then they get back together, with the acceptance of Mokia who sees Kumar's true love for Sanjana.

The owner of a high-class Japanese hotel, the Europa, hopes to win a prestigious and lucrative contract for the hotel as the site of a summit meeting between important international officials. Unfortunately, the yakuza have taken a liking to this hotel as both a hangout and a target for extortion. In order to win the contract, the owner realizes, he must rid the hotel of the yakuza. Fearing to confront them himself, he deputizes a hotel accountant, Suzuki (Yasuo Daichi) and a bellboy and former college sumo-club member, Wakasugi (Takehiro Murata). The hapless pair are no more daring than their employer, however, and their tentative attempts to address the problem fail until they meet Mahiru Inoue (Nobuko Miyamoto), a lawyer who specializes in dealing with the yakuza. With Inoue's direction, the hotel staff comes together to face down the yakuza ruffians, who are portrayed as craven, outwardly-threatening-but-inwardly-weak, fools.

Make Up! Sailor Soldier Usagi and Chibiusa overhear two girls talking about the Sailor Soldiers after they see a poster. As the girls debate over the smartest, most elegant, strongest, and the leader of the Sailor Soldiers, Usagi grandly claims those titles for herself. Chibiusa shakes her head at Usagi's delusion. Clips appear from the debut of each Sailor Soldier, and that girl's image song plays in the background. When even Tuxedo Mask has been mentioned, and the girls are about to leave, Usagi butts in on their conversation and asks them directly about Sailor Moon. The girls give a series of glowing compliments about Sailor Moon, but unlike their analysis of the other Sailor Soldiers, they also list her faults. After the girls leave, Usagi sarcastically apologizes for being a clumsy cry-baby and then bursts into exaggerated tears.
