That Night in Varennes (Italian: Il mondo nuovo; French: La Nuit de Varennes) is a 1982 Italian and French drama film directed by Ettore Scola. It is based on a novel by Catherine Rihoit. It tells the story of a fictional meeting between Restif de la Bretonne, Giacomo Casanova, Thomas Paine and Sophie de la Borde (a lady in waiting to the Queen). They are all traveling together in a coach that is a few hours behind the one that is carrying King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in their flight to Varennes during the French Revolution.
The film was entered into the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.
Synopsis
À Paris, en juin 1791, l’écrivain libertin Restif de La Bretonne est le témoin du départ, en pleine nuit et depuis le Palais Royal, d’un mystérieux carrosse. Intrigué, Restif se lance à sa poursuite en compagnie de Giacomo Casanova. Il découvre bientôt que ce carrosse tente d’en rejoindre un autre parti plus tôt et dont les occupants ne sont rien de moins que les membres de la famille royale…Actors

On May 8, 1938, the day Hitler visited Mussolini in Rome, Antonietta, a native and sentimental homemaker (Loren) stays home doing her usual domestic tasks, while her fascist husband and her six spoilt children take to the streets to follow the parade. The building is empty except for a neighbor across the complex (Mastroianni), a charming man named Gabriele. He is a radio broadcaster who has been dismissed from his job and is about to be deported to Sardinia because of his anti-fascist stance and his homosexuality. They meet by chance and began to talk. Antonietta is surprised by his opinions and, unaware of his sexual orientation, flirts with him.

Adelaide (Monica Vitti) is a florist who begins to date Oreste (Marcello Mastroianni), who is an already married construction worker. However, Nello (Giancarlo Giannini)], a pizza cook, interposes in the relationship, seducing Adelaide as well. The situation ensues in a quarrel, after which she is injured and hospitalized. Then, the three of them decide to live together but, eventually, the confused Adelaide leaves them after attempting suicide, to get involved romantically with Ambleto (Hércules Cortés), a butcher. Nonetheless, Nello the cook attempts suicide and the moved Adelaide returns with him. Oreste, who is unemployed now, intervenes again.
