It based on the novel by Marc Dugain. It is supposedly based on the experiences of one of the author's own ancestors during World War I.
Synopsis
The film concentrates more on the period spent in hospital than the original novel, and emphasizes the horror of the friends' injuries. On Adrien's arrival at the ward, all the mirrors are removed and staff are instructed not to give any to him, but we see from the expressions on the faces of others just how bad the damage is. Adrien becomes increasingly desperate to see the damage done to his face, even asking a visitor to draw a picture of him. Dupeyron ensures that we do not see the horrifying extent of Adrien's injuries until the moment that he himself does - by looking at his reflection in a window pane.Actors

Five French soldiers are convicted of self-mutilation in order to escape military service during World War I. They are condemned to face near certain death in the no man's land between the French and German trench lines. It appears that all of them were killed in a subsequent battle, but Mathilde, the fiancée of one of the soldiers, refuses to give up hope and begins to uncover clues as to what actually took place on the battlefield. She is all the while driven by the constant reminder of what her fiancé had carved into one of the bells of the church near their home, MMM for Manech Aime Mathilde (Manech Loves Mathilde; a pun on the French word aime, which is pronounced like the letter "M". In the English-language version, this is changed to "Manech's Marrying Mathilde").

The film begins in a working-class neighborhood in the Paris of the 1960s. The main character, Moїse Schmidt (Momo), is a young Jewish boy growing up without a mother and with a father afflicted by crippling depression. Momo is fascinated by the elderly Turkish Muslim man, Ibrahim Demirci ([demiɾˈdʒi]), who runs a grocery store across the street from his apartment (where Momo often shoplifts). Their relationship develops and soon Momo feels closer to Ibrahim than to his father. Ibrahim affectionately calls Moїse Momo, and adopts him when his father leaves and commits suicide. Momo and Ibrahim go on a journey to Turkey, Ibrahim's homeland, in their new car (a Simca Aronde Océane) where Momo learns about Ibrahim's culture. Before they can have an big advanture, Ibrahim is killed in a car crash and Momo returns to Paris to take over the shop.

À Hénart, dans le Pas-de-Calais, Pauline Duhez est infirmière libérale. Tous les jours, elle est confrontée à la misère sociale, à la disparition des services publics, tout en jonglant avec une vie personnelle bien remplie : son père, ancien métallurgiste malade de l'amiante dont elle s'occupe, et ses enfants, qu'elle élève seule. Réticente, Pauline se laisse séduire par le discours de la présidente du RNP, à la fibre sociale et en appelant au peuple, du docteur Berthier, qui évoque la notoriété et l'empathie de Pauline, et le soutien de ses amis, dont certains se révèlent ouvertement racistes.
