Synopsis
Fraîchement diplômé, Thomas Webb est un étudiant issu d'une riche famille d'éditeurs new-yorkais et rêve de devenir écrivain. Un jour, il découvre que son père entretien une liaison avec une autre femme, qu'il trouve magnifique. Voulant protéger sa mère de nature fragile, il décide de ne rien lui dire. Obsédé par l'aventure extra-conjugale de son père avec cette femme, nommée Johanna et dont la beauté l'éblouit, il décide de faire sa connaissance. Johanna et le jeune homme débutent alors à leur tour une liaison ensemble. Cette rencontre permet à Thomas de passer à l'âge adulte.Actors

Wyatt Frame (Alan Cumming) is an executive with record label MegaRecords. The label, headed by the trend-conscious and scheming Fiona (Parker Posey), manufactures faddish pop bands for consumption by the teenage market. Conspiring with the United States government, they add subliminal messages under the music to brainwash teens into buying their records and other consumer products, creating "a new trend every week". The Government's plan is to build a robust economy from the "wads of cash" teenagers supposedly earn from babysitting and minimum wage jobs. When a member of Wyatt's wildly successful boy band, Du Jour, uncovers one such message and asks Wyatt about it aboard their private jet, Wyatt and the pilot (Harry Elfont) parachute out of the plane, leaving it to crash and kill the band members.

Fred Wilson (Charles Grodin), an executive of the Petrox Oil Company, forms an expedition based on infrared imagery which reveals a previously undiscovered Indian Ocean island hidden by a permanent cloud bank. Wilson believes the island has a huge deposit of oil. Jack Prescott (Jeff Bridges), a primate paleontologist who wants to see the island for himself, stows away on the expedition's vessel. Prescott reveals himself when he warns the crew the cloud bank may be caused by an unknown beast. Wilson orders Prescott locked up, claiming that he is really a spy from a rival oil company. While escorted to lock-up, Prescott spots a life raft which carries the beautiful and unconscious Dwan (Jessica Lange). Wilson conducts a thorough background check on Prescott and realizes he is telling the truth. He appoints Prescott the expedition's official photographer and requests that he be present when Dwan revives because of his medical background. Upon waking, Dwan says she is an aspiring actress who was aboard a director's yacht which suddenly exploded.

Three young confidence tricksters— Vinnie, Carter and Rosie — pull off a racing scam, substituting winners for plodders and winning big money on long odds.
