La Scoumoune is a remake of a 1961 French movie, Un nommé La Rocca, directed by Jean Becker, also based on Giovanni's novel and starring starring Belmondo in the same part.

Synopsis
Marseille, 1934. Xavier Saratov est en prison pour un meurtre que Jeannot Villanova, le patron de la pègre marseillaise, lui a fait endosser en mettant un cadavre dans sa voiture. Georgia, sa sœur, et son ami Roberto Borgo, surnommé « la Scoumoune » parce qu'il porte malheur à ses ennemis en dégainant et en tirant plus vite qu'eux, tentent de prouver son innocence. Xavier est condamné à vingt ans de prison.Actors

Marceau Léonetti (Lino Ventura), a competent and energetic officer stops by chance the son of an influential lawyer driving under the influence of alcohol. The French gangster Abel Davos is on the run from the police. He has been tried in absentia and sentenced to death. He flees to Italy together with his wife Thérèse and their two children. He performs a successful holdup in Milano with his accomplice Raymond, but chased by the police the two decide to return to France. Entering France on a seemingly deserted beach, the small group is surprised by two customs officers and end up in a gunfight, where Thérèse and Raymond are killed. Left alone with the children, Abel calls his friends Riton and Fargier in Paris to come and pick him up in Nice. Unable to travel to Nice, they send a man named Éric Stark, who works as an ambulance driver. Éric lets Abel hide in his attic and the two men become friends.

Chercheurs d'or au Canada, Aldo et ses compagnons essuient une attaque de bandits le jour de la paie. Seuls, Aldo et deux indiens en sortent vivants et décident de profiter de l'or en retournant à la civilisation. Chemin faisant, Aldo fausse compagnie aux indiens et part en canoe sur une rivière. Son embarcation prise dans les rapides s'écrase au pied d'une cascade avec le chargement d'or, mais Aldo en réchappe in extremis… Il rejoint à Montréal son meilleur ami, Gérard, paraplégique depuis un accident dont Aldo est responsable alors qu'ils étaient tous deux pilotes automobile. Il retrouve également la « Baronne », une ancienne maîtresse qui dirige un bar, et son fidèle employé, le vieux John.
