Morgane descends from a long line of witches. Her son Arthur has an innate gift for witchcraft. Yet Morgane wants him to become a normal human being without supernatural powers. La Contessa Elena Torlato-Favrini (her last name taken from The Barefoot Contessa) is a wealthy Italian industrialist living in a sprawling estate near Lake Geneva, Switzerland. She is attended by Jules the Gardener, his wife Yvonne, their daughter Cécile, the chauffeur Laurent, and the mysterious Della Larue (or "Della Street," a reference to Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason stories). At the film's opening, Elena goes for a drive by herself and encounters Roger Lennox (his last name taken from The Long Goodbye), an apparent drifter. Elena's trajectory is brought to an abrupt halt as she stops to help Roger, who has evidently been forced off the road by a truck and is severely incapacitated. En écrivant un article sur Georg Jenatsch, un pasteur et politicien grison du 17ème siècle, le journaliste Christophe Sprecher se laisse peu à peu entraîner dans des aventures qui le dépassent. Jenatsch était une personnalité ambiguë dont le meurtre reste un mystère. Sprecher est tellement habité par ses recherches que celles-ci en deviennent une véritable obsession, au point qu'il développe des hallucinations qui le submergent de façon imprévisible sous forme de déjà-vus. Cela met à mal sa relation avec son amie Nina, qui finira cependant par l'accompagner dans sa quête.

Exiled from the Soviet Union in 1929, Leon Trotsky travels from Turkey to France to Norway, before arriving in Mexico in January 1937. The film begins in Mexico City in 1940, during a May Day celebration. Trotsky has not escaped the attention of the Soviet ruler of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, who sends out an assassin named Frank Jacson. The killer decides to infiltrate Trotsky's house by befriending one of the young communists in Trotsky's circle.
