The Patsy is a 1928 American silent comedy-drama film directed by King Vidor, produced and starring Marion Davies for her Cosmopolitan Productions, and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was Marie Dressler's "comeback" film after a long slump in her movie career.

Synopsis

Patricia "Patsy" Harrington est un peu timide face à sa mère et à sa sœur aînée Grace. Elle tente d'attirer l'attention d'un des prétendants de Grace, Tony Anderson. Suivant les conseils de Tony, elle lit un livre sur le développement de la personnalité. Pour montrer sa "personnalité" à Tony, elle fait des imitations de Pola Negri, Mae Murray ou Lillian Gish. Comme il reste indifférent, elle fait une fausse fugue avec un jeune homme pour rendre Tony jaloux, mais cela n'a pour conséquence que la colère de toute sa famille. Finalement, son père sortira de son apathie pour s'affirmer comme le vrai maître de maison, Patsy sera aimée de Tony et Grace portera son attention sur quelqu'un d'autre.

As described in a film publication, Margaret "Peg" O'Connell (Taylor), according to her uncle's will, is to be educated in England under the supervision of her aunt, Mrs. Chichester (Lewis). Upon her arrival from Ireland, she is looked down upon by the Chichester household for her lack of culture, and she vows never to become a lady. She meets Jerry, a young man from a neighboring estate, who becomes her friend. Then she discovers that he is Sir Gerald Adair (Hamilton) and rebels at the deception he has been conducting. She also finds out that the only reason her aunt is keeping her is because of compensation from the will. Peg leaves to return home, but finds that she is in love with Gerald. Gerald follows her and proposes.

As a yacht sails into an island chain in the South Pacific, a large number of natives in pontoon boats sail out to greet them. The natives dive for the trinkets the yacht's crew throws them. A shark arrives, scaring most of the natives away. In an attempt to catch a shark by throwing it bait that has been tied to a harpoon-sized hook, Johnny Baker (Joel McCrea) accidentally steps into a loop that tightens around his ankle. The shark takes the bait, and the rope grows tighter, causing the rope to yank the young man overboard. Luana (Dolores del Río), the daughter of the chief, saves his life by leaping into the water and cutting the rope.

Toutefois, elle ne le reçoit pas à bras ouverts et lui annonce son départ pour l'Italie. Il se remet alors au travail avec fièvre et rejoint sa femme.

Young Peggy Pepper (Marion Davies) wants to be in motion pictures, so her father (Dell Henderson) drives her across the country from their home in Georgia to Hollywood. After some initial disillusionment, she meets Billy Boone (William Haines) in a studio commissary; he tells her to show up at his set if she wants work. Peggy goes, gets sprayed with seltzer water at her first entrance, and is at first shocked and dismayed to find she is doing slapstick comedy in low-budget "Comet" productions, but she decides to "take it on the chin" and, with Billy's loving support, becomes a success.
