Wealthy French playboy Toto Duryea (Frank Fay) is irresistible to women, but is in love with none of them. According to Monsieur Rancour (Armand Kaliz), for Toto, "every woman is like a new dish to be tasted." When he is finally and instantly smitten with American Diane Churchill (Laura LaPlante), he has great difficulty proving to her and her father (Charles Winninger) that he truly loves her. Finally, he convinces her that he is sincere; Mr. Churchill insists that Toto give up his women and carousing and stay away from his daughter for six months to prove he has reformed. Reporter Jean Christy (Rosalind Russell) works for a newspaper in danger of being thrown away by its young owner, Pat Buckley (Patric Knowles), after Buckley has a falling-out with the editor-in-chief, Robert Lansford (Errol Flynn). Meanwhile, Lansford hopes to gain tycoon John Dillingwell's (Walter Connolly) business for his public relations firm, and uses his position at Buckley's paper to drum up good press for Dillingwell. In the process, he discovers that Dillingwell's granddaughter Lorri (Olivia de Havilland) is Buckley's fiancée. Lansford decides to try to charm Lorri while Christy makes a play for Buckley.

In 17th century England, an Irish doctor named Peter Blood (Errol Flynn) is summoned to aid Lord Gildoy, a wounded patron who had participated in the Monmouth Rebellion. The film begins with King Philip II of Spain (Montagu Love) declaring his intention to destroy England and after this "puny rockbound island as barren and treacherous as her Queen" is out of the way, he believes that world conquest will follow: he says his great wall map, one day, "will have ceased to be a map of the world; it will be Spain." He sends one of his courtiers, Don Alvarez (Claude Rains), as his ambassador to allay the suspicions of Queen Elizabeth I (Flora Robson) about the great armada he is building to invade England. In England, some of the Queen's ministers plead with her to build a fleet, which she hesitates to do in order to spare the purses of her subjects.

Union officer Kerry Bradford (Errol Flynn) stages a daring escape from a Confederate prison run by prison commander Vance Irby (Randolph Scott) after learning that the rebels plan to smuggle five million dollars in gold from Virginia City, Nevada (in Union territory), to Texas, from where it can be shipped to Richmond, Virginia to aid the Confederate war effort. Bradford reports to Union headquarters and is immediately sent to Virginia City to determine where the gold is being kept. On the stagecoach, he meets and falls in love with the elegant Julia Hayne (Miriam Hopkins), who unbeknownst to him is in fact a dance-hall girl—and a rebel spy! Also on the stagecoach is the legendary John Murrell (Humphrey Bogart), leader of a gang of "banditos" traveling as a gun salesman. Mortimer Thompson (Edward Everette Horton) and Steve Craig (Robert Armstrong) are a pair of sidewalk confidence men working Broadway one step ahead of the police selling phony watches. Broke, they arrange to have dinner with Gibbs, an old friend, thinking he will help them with some money, but Gibbs and his daughter Gloria (Sybil Jason) don't have that much money too and think that Steve and Mortimer will help them with money too. At the time Gibbs is hiding from gangsters. After Steve, Mortimer, Gibbs and Gloria are finished with their dinner in the restaurant Gibbs gets shot outside by the gangsters who was chasing him. Steve and Mortimer hurry to leave the restaurant before they get hurt, but by mistake leave Gibbs daughter Gloria, Steve reminds Mortimer that they forgot about Gloria, but Mortimer doesn't care to go back and get Gloria, but Steve convinces him to. Gloria stay's with Steve and Mortimer for a night at their place and Gloria takes Mortimer's bed, so Mortimer has to sleep in the toilet. Later on they try to put Gloria in an orphanage, but Steve felt bad for Gloria because she was crying not to go there so he didn't give her to the orphanage. So Steve and Mortimer try to take care of Gloria with the help of Jean (Glenda Farrell), a hat check girl at their hotel they live in. Steve and Mortimer find out that Gloria could sing and dance so they try to make money off of her talents on the street, Gloria also helps them sell their fake watches too, Gloria finds out and she doesn't like the idea, but Steve and Mortimer still do it. Steve goes into a crap game with a gangster, but the gangster refuses to pay Steve the money he gambled, Steve threatens to kill the gangster and later on the gangster is actually found dead and Steve is the suspect for a crime he didn't do. Jean puts Gloria in an orphanage because she thinks that Steve and Mortimer ain't responsible enough to take care of Gloria. Another gang kidnaps Gloria to force Steve out of hiding, Steve later on convinces the gangsters to release Gloria, and just about as they are trying to kill him, the police, tipped of by Mortimer and Jean, arrive at the hideout. His name cleared, Steve marries Jean and adopt Gloria, and also open a roadside cafe with Mortimer.
