Add to a movie listThe Purple Taxi (French: Un taxi mauve) is a 1977 French-Irish-Italian film directed by Yves Boisset, based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Michel Déon. It was entered into the 1977 Cannes Film Festival.
The film is about a group of emotionally troubled expatriates living in a self-imposed exile in a small village (Eyeries) in Ireland. The cast includes Peter Ustinov, Charlotte Rampling, Philippe Noiret, Edward Albert and, somewhat eccentrically cast as a small-town Irish physician, Fred Astaire.
The film's score was performed by The Chieftains.
Synopsis
L'arrivée d'une jeune femme, Sharon (Charlotte Rampling), dans un petit village d'Irlande bouleverse le quotidien fait d'amitiés et de silence de Philippe Marchal (Philippe Noiret), qui s'est réfugié dans ce village après la mort de son fils, et de Jerry (Edward Albert), frère de Sharon, cadet d'une famille de milliardaires, exilé en Irlande par sa famille à la suite d'une sombre histoire. Dans ce pays sauvage, tout semble se dérouler paisiblement sauf quand surgit Taubelman (Peter Ustinov), personnage fantasque semblant connaître tout sur tout le monde, accompagné de sa ravissante et muette fille Anne (Agostina Belli) dont Jerry ne va pas tarder à tomber fou amoureux. Alors que Sharon est déterminée à découvrir qui est réellement Taubelman.Actors

In Santo Domingo the experienced seaman Jacques Cournot is asked for advice by a certain Mr Hendrix who wishes to purchase a sailing boat. Cournot recommends to buy the ship in question. Subsequently Mr Hendrix negotiates the price with Mrs Osborne, the owner of the "Dragoon". Little later, after corpses of murdered strangers are found on the beach, Cournot finds himself interrogated by police because Mr Hendrix and the "Dragoon" have disappeared while Mrs Osborne pretends to be unaware of any deal.

Ashanti is an action adventure film, set against the background of modern day slave trading, with a man who determinedly takes on a perilous journey in order to find his beautiful wife, who has been kidnapped by brutal slave traders. David and Anansa Linderby (Caine and Johnson respectively) are doctors with the World Health Organization. On a medical mission carrying out an inoculation programme, they visit a West African village. While David takes photographs of tribal dancers, Anansa goes swimming alone. She is attacked and abducted by slave traders led by Suleiman (Peter Ustinov), who mistake her for an Ashanti tribeswoman. The police can do nothing to find her and David has almost given up hope when he hears rumours that Anansa has been kidnapped by Sulieman to be sold to Arab Prince Hassan (Omar Sharif). The African authorities deny that the slave trade even exists. So David must find help in a shadowy world where the rescuers of slaves are just as ruthless as the traders themselves. As David tracks her across Africa and the Sahara desert, he is helped by a member of the Anti-Slavery League (Rex Harrison), a mercenary helicopter pilot (William Holden), and Malik (Kabir Bedi) a tribesman who is seeking revenge on Suleiman.

A young man (Philippe Noiret) arrives at a train station to see his wife. After four years of marriage the couple are having problems of a somewhat existential nature--the wife loves her husband, but is thinking of leaving him (he had an affair some time back, but her problem is not jealousy so much as questioning the very nature of love itself). The couple discuss their lives, and become resigned to the fact that they belong together, even if their love has changed. They return to Paris, the wife now better understanding her husband's nature because she's seen his hometown. As this drama unfolds, we see the lives of the poor but proud people living there; fishermen wanting to harvest shellfish from a small lagoon they have been forbidden to use because of an alleged problem with bacteria, a small child dies of an unknown illness, a young man wins the right to court the 16-year-old daughter of a neighbor, after proving himself in a local aquatic jousting tournament.
