Synopsis
Un psychiatre (Eric Bana) s'intéresse au journal intime d'une patiente, Rosemary McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave), accusée d'avoir tué son enfant issu d'une relation illégitime avec un sympathisant anglais. Enfermée dans un hôpital psychiatrique, sur le point d'être démoli, depuis une cinquantaine d'années, elle est suivie psychologiquement par le psychiatre qui est engagé pour réévaluer son état. Il découvre son attachement pour la Bible et elle lui raconte tout ce qu'elle a vécu et pourquoi elle a passé sa vie dans cet hôpital…Actors

The film opens with Christy Brown, who has cerebral palsy, being taken to a charity event, where he meets his handler, a nurse named Mary Carr. She begins reading his autobiography. Christy could not walk or talk, but still received love and support from his family, especially his mother. One day, while Christy was still a young boy, he is the only person home to see his mother fall down a flight of stairs while in labor. He is able to get the attention of some neighbors, who come to his mother's rescue. His father, who had never really believed in Christy, becomes a supporter when, one day, when he is about ten, Christy uses his left foot (the only part of his body he can fully control) to write the word "mother" on the floor with a piece of yellow chalk.

In April 1967, 18-year-old Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder), a depressed and unmotivated girl is checked into Claymoore psychiatric hospital, after having a nervous breakdown and taking an overdose of aspirin. She denies the accusation from many that she was attempting to commit suicide, claiming that she was only trying to get rid of her headache. Morgan Delt (David Warner) is a failed artist and son of communist parents who own a fish and chips shop in downmarket London. His upper-class wife, Leonie (Vanessa Redgrave), has given up on him and has just secured a divorce in order to marry Charles Napier (Robert Stephens), an art gallery owner of her own social standing. Given the innately rich and personal world of fantasy Morgan has locked himself into, he goes off the deep end. He performs a series of bizarre stunts in a campaign to win back Leonie, including putting a skeleton in Leonie's bed, blowing up her bed as Leonie's mother is on it, and crashing her wedding dressed as a gorilla, for which scene Reisz borrows clips from the original King Kong film to illustrate Morgan's fantasy world.
