Synopsis
Carlo et Silvia forme un couple d'intellectuels bourgeois qui, depuis vingt ans, partagent le même appartement et vivent des histoires adultères communément acceptées. Silvia fait alors la connaissance d'un jeune homme néo-nazi. Elle est attirée par sa violence et le « culte de la force ». Le récit d'une tentative aléatoire, celle d'un jeune metteur en scène napolitain appelé à adapter pour le théâtre de Sarajevo, Les Sept contre Thèbes, tragédie grecque écrite par Eschyle au Ve s. av. Nuit du 1er mai 1959. Dans la salle d'attente de la Stazione Termini de Rome, un homme en état d'ébriété avancée est appréhendé par la police locale. Ce vagabond alcoolique est en réalité Renato Caccioppoli, mathématicien renommé et professeur à l'Université de Naples. Relâché à l'aube, il rentre chez lui par le premier train du matin. Débute pour lui ce qui sera son ultime semaine. Errant dans les rues de Naples, le mathématicien croise des amis, des connaissances et des familiers. Au fil de ses pérégrinations, se reconstituent des séquences de sa vie - sans voix off et sans flash back - alors que l'imminence d'un acte irréversible se dessine de plus en plus nettement. Le 8 mai, Caccioppoli se donnera la mort.

Delia est auteure de bande dessinée. Elle vit depuis de nombreuses années à Bologne et demeure toujours, à quarante ans passés, célibataire . Elle est subitement rappelée à Naples, sa ville natale, car sa mère y a été retrouvée noyée dans les eaux du Golfe. L'instruction policière conclut à un suicide. À l'inverse, Delia n'accorde aucune confiance à la thèse officielle, persuadée que l'exubérance et la vitalité de sa génitrice ne s'ajustent nullement à un acte aussi brutalement désespéré et catégorique. Elle mène donc sa propre enquête. Les événements et la reconstruction fragmentaire des derniers jours de sa mère, notamment les communications téléphoniques avec un personnage énigmatique, mettent brusquement en lumière des faits antérieurs que Delia avait enfouis dans sa mémoire. Ainsi, du souvenir d'une altercation violente entre ses parents au sujet d'une relation ambiguë. À la suite de quoi, elle s'était éloignée de sa mère... Au fond, Delia ne se sent, dans l'immédiat, guère préparée à démêler un passé trop douloureux. Elle prend, en dernier recours, la décision de rejoindre Bologne, laissant dans l'ombre une conclusion aussi tragique que mystérieuse.

The film tells the short life of the great Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi. A noble, his birth's in Recanati, and soon Giacomo learns to study Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic and English in the rich library of his palace that his father built. Giacomo, however, possessing an inquisitive, restless spirit, would like to know to travel abroad to widen his views and enrich his knowledge, as was usual for European landed gentry in the 19th century. Still this desire of his lies at odds with his parents (his father, while possessing a sensibility akin to his, is too bound by the social conventions and the expectations tied to his role as 'Pater Familias'; his mother, on the other hand, is too busy shoring up the household declining fortunes to even care about intellectual aspirations). So the poet begins to write his first works, reflecting about human condition, coming to the conclusion that unhappiness is a costant factor of human existence, and that in life there is no way to remedy this problem. In 1820s, Leopardi can finally leave the native Recanati, and travels to Rome and Florence where, however, his high expectations of intellectual rewards and public recognition are frustrated. Suffering from repeated instances of unrequited love: chiefly that he felt towards the Countess Fanny Targioni Tozzetti, contribute to Leopardi's negative view of life and human experience. Finally he moves to Naples, where a physical decadence led him to death.

In 1968, in Rome, at the famous La Sapienza University, a group of young people's occupying the institution, starting in the city's famous revolt of students. The group of students is led by the proletarian Libero, son of unemployed workers of Fiat, who wants to attack the gaming bourgeois political and Italy and permanently to change the future for the youth of the country. The police opposes him, while the upper class student Laura falls in love with Libero. In the meantime, however, the Rome police plan to stifle the student revolt, and among these is the young Nicola, who secretly loves the theater, and so wants to star in a famous company. When Laura meets Nicola, changes perspective and the two fall in love. Nicola has the task of the police to infiltrate him in the group in protest, and to discover the weak points because the police can attach the students with more simplicity.
