Lady Lou est forcée par son père adoptif, Hatfield, de travailler dans un saloon d'un camp de bûcherons. A smoking, drinking, jazz listening, young prostitute named Sadie Thompson (Gloria Swanson) arrives at the island of Tutuila (now part of American Samoa), claiming she is waiting for employment upon a ship.
