Synopsis

Russie, fin du XIX siècle. Iégourotchka, un petit garçon d'à peine neuf ans, quitte sa mère pour entrer au lycée dans une grande ville. À bord d'une antique calèche, il entreprend son premier voyage au long cours, en compagnie du père Khristofor et de son oncle Kouzmichov, négociant en laine. Il découvre la beauté et l'immensité de la steppe russe...

Giovanni Episcopo is a modest clerk, shy and awkward, who is jocked by his colleagues. The man does not know that he is going to be punished forever by fate. A contingent of Italian prisoners of war arrive on a train from Germany after World War II to Turin. The city where Ernesto (played by Nazzari) lives has been bombed, his mother is dead and his sister has gone missing. State help for returning veterans is scant and bureaucracy rampant. A woman spy and some male agents working for the Germans during World War I land at night near the British naval base at Scapa Flow, from a U-boat. The British, led by Col. Foreman, ambush the landing party, capturing two of the men, but the woman gets away. Foreman fakes the execution of one of the spies, thus tricking the second one, Meyer, into becoming a double agent in the hopes of using him to capture his woman accomplice, whom Meyer identifies under the codename Fraulein Doktor. Fraulein Doktor is portrayed as a brilliant spy who stole a formula for a nerve gas which the Germans used to great effect against the Allies on the battlefield.
