"The Sugar Land Express" also was the nickname of the American football player Kenneth Hall.

The Sugarland Express is a 1974 American neo-noir drama film co-written and directed by Steven Spielberg in his theatrical feature film directorial debut. It stars Goldie Hawn, Ben Johnson, William Atherton, and Michael Sacks.

It is about a husband and wife trying to outrun the law and was based on a true story. The event partially took place, the story is partially set, and the movie was partially filmed in Sugar Land, Texas. Other scenes for the film were filmed in San Antonio, Lone Oak, Floresville, Pleasanton, Converse and Del Rio, Texas.

The Sugarland Express marks the first collaboration between Spielberg and composer John Williams. Williams has scored all but three of Spielberg's directed-films since (Twilight Zone: The Movie, The Color Purple, and Bridge of Spies being the only exceptions).

Synopsis

In April 2054, Washington, D.C. has a special police force called PreCrime that stops murderers before they act. Murders are predicted using three Precogs, mutated humans who "previsualize" crimes by receiving visions of the future. Over the past six years, PreCrime has successfully reduced the city's murder rate to zero, and the Federal government is on the verge of adopting it, even though the public finds it controversial. Captain John Anderton (Tom Cruise), the head of PreCrime, has been suffering from drug addiction since the unresolved disappearance of his son, Sean, which led to his wife, Lara (Kathryn Morris), divorcing him. With PreCrime poised to go nationwide, the system is being audited by Danny Witwer (Colin Farrell), an agent from the United States Department of Justice. In the middle of the audit, the Precogs generate a new prediction, one saying that Anderton will murder a man named Leo Crow in thirty-six hours. Anderton does not know Crow, but flees the area as Witwer begins a manhunt.

A young man carrying a closely guarded guitar case befriends a free-spirited young woman while hitchhiking across the desert in southern California en route to the Pacific coast. Along the way, the man engages the woman in an olive-spitting contest, and then she introduces him to the joys of smoking cannabis and having sex in a sleeping bag. Following the scene alluding to sexual intercourse, the young man is seen walking on the median of a road, which is perhaps symbolic. As the pair reach the beach, the man frolics in the surf, while the woman covertly inspects the contents of his guitar case: a suit and tie, toothpaste, mouthwash, a roll of toilet paper and a copy of Arthur C. Clarke's The City and the Stars. The woman smiles in bemusement, perhaps sensing all along that her companion was not the quintessential hippie that he appeared to be. She then proceeds to stand up and leave the beach, leaving the man behind.
