The Swan (1956) an Eastman Color in CinemaScope is a remake of The Swan (1925), a Paramount Pictures release. Another film version was released as One Romantic Night (1930).

The film is a romantic comedy released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, directed by Charles Vidor, produced by Dore Schary from a screenplay by John Dighton, and based on the play by Ferenc Molnár. The original music score was by Bronislau Kaper, the cinematography by Joseph Ruttenberg and Robert Surtees, the art direction by Randall Duell and Cedric Gibbons, and the costume design by Helen Rose.

The film stars Grace Kelly, Alec Guinness and Louis Jourdan with Agnes Moorehead, Jessie Royce Landis, Brian Aherne, Leo G. Carroll, Estelle Winwood, and Robert Coote.

Synopsis

The film, set in 1910, deals with the story of the daughter of a minor branch of a European royal house who is being considered as a wife for her cousin, the heir to the throne.

At the New York Bulletin newspaper, its owner, Robert Drexel Gow (Charles Coburn), receives a teletype story that the newspaper’s thirty-nine-year-old editor, Max Wharton (Alexander Knox), is resigning to enlist in the army. Robert is livid, both at the news and the method that he found out about the news. Asano, un industriel japonais dont la famille a elle aussi été beaucoup touchée par la guerre. Leur amitié naissante est malmenée lorsque Jerry suspecte M. Asano, lui-même un des négociateurs du traité, d'avoir cherché un gain politique dans cette relation. Bien que M Jacoby n'y croie pas vraiment, elle refuse de voir M. Asano lors de leur dernière soirée à bord. Une fois au Japon, Jerry offense sans le faire exprès M. Asano, et la conférence est annulée. M Jacoby se rend alors chez M. Asano. Après une soirée très agréable, il accepte de reprendre les négociations. Alors que les trois Américains se préparent à repartir, M Jacoby est surprise de recevoir une demande en mariage de M. Asano, mais aussi par la réaction négative d'Alice et Jerry. Mais en fait elle refuse surtout car elle considère que M. Asano et elle sont encore trop marqués par leurs histoires personnelles. Des mois plus tard, M. Asano arrive à New York comme délégué aux Nations unies. Il rencontre à nouveau M Jacoby, qui accepte désormais qu'il lui fasse la cour.
