Synopsis
Suspecté de meurtre, Pietro Scotti, un honnête citoyen, risque la peine de mort en raison d'un témoin à charge de dernière minute. Ce dernier, Giuseppe Marchi, un vieil employé de bureau, raconte qu'il l'a vu près du cadavre sur les lieux du crime. Mais il s'avère que sa montre retardait et annule donc son témoignage. Pietro bénéficie d'un non-lieu. Essayant de refaire sa vie, il demande en mariage une jeune fille pauvre, Linda. Mais leur couple est perturbé par Giuseppe, qui semble suivre Pietro...Actors

The film is set in Rome during the Marshall Plan. Ferdinando Esposito (Totò) is a small villain who tries to support his family with his tricks. With his accomplice Amilcare (Aldo Giuffrè) pretends to have found an ancient coin in the Roman Forum and an American tourist cheats: Mr. Locuzzo that, unfortunately for him, is the chairman of a committee of the American charity. A disguised bandit steals valuable jewellery from Commendatore Anzaloni's apartment and flees, leaving Anzaloni unharmed. Inspector Ingravallo investigates and finds that the robbery is suspicious in that the robber was able to find valuables too quickly. A neighbour, Liliana Banducci, employs a servant girl, Assuntina. Her fiancé, Diomede, tries to escape when he sees police tailing Assuntina. But Diomede has an alibi. Liliana's cousin, Dr. Valdarena, pays her a visit, only to find her corpse on the floor. But before calling police, Valdarena removes an envelope addressed to him from the sideboard.
