Add to a movie listThe Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (Ger. Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse) is a 1960 black-and-white crime film/thriller made in West Germany. It was a West German/French/Italian international co-production and the last film directed by Fritz Lang. It starred Peter van Eyck, Dawn Addams and Gert Fröbe. The film made use of the character Dr. Mabuse, who had appeared in earlier films by Lang back in 1922 and 1933. The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse spawned a film series of German "Mabuse" films that were released over the following years to compete with Rialto Film's Krimi films.
Synopsis
A reporter is killed in his car on his way to work. Inspector Kras gets a call from his informant Peter Cornelius, a blind fortune-teller, who had a vision of the crime but not the perpetrator. Meanwhile, Henry Travers, a rich American industrialist, checks into the Luxor Hotel, which has been outfitted by the Nazis during World War II to spy on people in every room. He becomes involved with Marian Menil who is being threatened by her evil clubfooted husband. Hieronymus B. Mistelzweig, purportedly a salesman, who is also a guest in the hotel always seems to be lurking about. These disparate characters eventually get together to solve what appears to be the re-emergence of the long-dead Dr.Actors

In London, Dr. Orloff (Bela Lugosi) runs an insurance agency where he loans money in exchange for the assigning of life insurance benefits to himself of many of his customers' policies. A resident of Orloff's (under the name "Dearborn") home for the "Destitute Blind" is Jake, a tall, hideous brute, who murders on Orloff's behalf. Scotland Yard begins finding bodies in the Thames River. One of the dead men has a daughter named Diane (Greta Gynt) for whom Orloff obtains employment at the home for the blind. Suspicions begin to arise surrounding Dearborn and Orloff in relation to the dead bodies. Orloff sends Jake (Wilfred Walter) to kill Diane who has found out too much about them. When Orloff disappears, Diane finds one of her father's cuff links in the home from the blind. Confronted by Diane, Dearborn removes his disguise to show himself as Orloff. Orloff traps Diane with a straight-jacket and calls for Jake to finish the job. Jake refuses as he has found out that Orloff has murdered a blind friend of his. Jake turns on Orloff and throws him out of a window allowing him to sink in the mud below.

In a noisy print shop, a disgraced police detective named Hofmeister (Karl Meixner) escapes from pursuing criminals' attacks. Hofmeister telephones his former superior Inspector Karl Lohmann (Otto Wernicke) and explains frantically that he has discovered a huge criminal conspiracy. Before he can disclose the identity of responsible criminal, the lights go out, shots are fired, and Hofmeister becomes mad. In a Montreal apartment, a woman named Lisa (Samantha Jones) waits for an old man to sew bags of heroin into the cloth body of an old-fashioned doll. As she leaves the apartment with the doll, we see the man watching her leave, then dialing someone on the phone. Lisa takes the doll with her on an airline flight to New York City, but when, on disembarking, she sees a man watching her, she becomes worried and gives the doll for safekeeping to a man she'd spoken with on the plane, professional photographer Sam Hendrix (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.). The man who'd been watching Lisa then roughly escorts her away. Franco Arnò (Karl Malden) a middle-aged blind man is walking down a street at night with his niece Lori (Cinzia De Carolis) when they pass by a man in a car. Franco overhears him mention blackmail. They walk back to Franco's apartment nearby and while Lori sleeps, Franco works on a puzzle when he hears a noise. En route to meet his fiancée, Katherine Grant (Sylvia Sidney), Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy) is arrested on flimsy circumstantial evidence for the kidnapping of a child. Gossip soon travels around the small town, growing more distorted through each retelling, until a mob gathers at the jail. When the resolute sheriff (Edward Ellis) refuses to give up his prisoner, the enraged townspeople burn down the building, two of them also throwing dynamite into the flames as they flee the scene.
