Add to a movie listThe Trail Beyond is a 1934 Western film starring John Wayne, Noah Beery, Sr., and Noah Beery, Jr.. The motion picture was based on the novel The Wolf Hunters by James Oliver Curwood, which was also adapted as a silent film entitled The Wolf Hunters (1926) and a later sound film also called The Wolf Hunters (1949).
This film presents an extremely rare opportunity to see Wallace Beery's brother and nephew appear together in a movie. Noah Beery, Jr., who played "Rocky" in The Rockford Files with James Garner forty years later, has an extremely large role as John Wayne's character's best friend and appears alongside Wayne in almost every scene, while the senior Beery enjoys only a few minutes of screen time despite his higher billing. Wayne was 27 years old when The Trail Beyond was shot, while Beery, Jr. was 21.
Stunning location backgrounds filmed around Mammoth Lakes, California set this film firmly apart from most of the other Poverty Row westerns shot during the decade in which Wayne found himself trapped between his screen masterpieces The Big Trail (1930) and Stagecoach (1939).
Synopsis
Un vieil homme confie à Rod Drew la mission de retrouver Marie, la fille de son frère John Ball, disparue depuis longtemps (mais il y a erreur sur le prénom…) Drew commence son aventure mouvementée dans le train qui l'emmène au nord du Canada : il porte secours à un homme menacé par des joueurs de cartes que ce dernier accuse d'avoir triché. Bagarre et coup de feu. L'homme se révèle être Wabi, un demi-sang indien qui est un ami d’enfance. Les deux compères s'enfuient en se jetant du pont ferroviaire dans le fleuve. Ils trouveront entre-temps la cabane où mourut l'infortuné John Ball et le plan de sa mine d’or. La tâche de Rod s'annonce désormais périlleuse car Wabi est maintenant recherché pour meurtre et il est lui-même considéré comme un probable complice. Ils vont devoir échapper, à la fois, aux brigands voleurs d'or menés par Jules LaRocque et à la Police montée qui les recherchent.Actors

Wayne plays John Carruthers, an undercover US Marshal, but we don't know that until well into the film. He appears to be in town investigating a string of robberies committed by the Polka Dot Bandit (Yakima Canutt), but when he's a little late in discovering one of the Bandit's latest thefts, Sheriff Jake (George "Gabby" Hayes) thinks he's the thief. For some reason, instead of arresting him, Jake accompanies him on his journey; after all, as Wayne says, "It's kind of lonesome trailing alone." The two stumble upon a gang robbing a pack-mule train; they rescue the beautiful Betty Mason (Eleanor Hunt), whose father has just been killed by the bandits. She and her father were bringing desperately needed provisions to town, but the bandits have successfully cut off any supplies, forcing the townspeople to consider fleeing their homes or starving to death.

Bandits led by Matt the Mute enter a bar and kill multiple people. Randy Bowers comes to town and is framed by Matt the Mute, who is working with the sheriff, who doesn't know that Matt is really a criminal. Matt the Mute writes out everything he wants to say. Randy escapes with the help of Sally Rogers, the niece of the dead owner of the bar. Bowers runs from the sheriff, and ends up in the cave in which the bandits have their hideout. They kidnap Sally, who escapes with the help of Bowers. Matt the Mute is killed when he enters the bar, which is filled with explosives, and the niece marries Randy.
