The Tree of Life is a 2011 American experimental drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick and starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain. The film chronicles the origins and meaning of life by way of a middle-aged man's childhood memories of his family living in 1950s Texas, interspersed with imagery of the origins of the universe and the inception of life on Earth.

After several years in development and missing 2009 and 2010 release dates, The Tree of Life premiered in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d'Or. It ranked #1 on review aggregator Metacritic's "Top Ten List of 2011", and in January 2012 was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.

Although early reviews for The Tree of Life were polarized, many critics and scholars have since declared the film a masterpiece. In the 2012 Sight & Sound critics' poll, 16 critics, including the renowned Roger Ebert, voted it one of the ten greatest films of all time; this placed it at #102 in the final list (making it the third film on the list which had been released since the year 2000, behind Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive). The film also received five votes in the directors' poll (placing it at #132), and in 2015, the BBC listed it one of the 100 greatest American films ever made.

Synopsis

The film begins with a quotation from the Book of Job: "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the Earth?... When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"

Jolene (Jessica Chastain) is a 15-year-old foster child recently orphaned. At 15, she marries Mickey, a "green", nerdy, 20-year-old, partially to break free of the foster care. The teen couple live with Mickey's Uncle Phil (Dermot Mulroney) and Aunt Kay (Theresa Russell). Jolene asks Mickey about his mother, but Mickey rebuffs her and starts crying. To make him feel better, she then takes off the nightgown and seduces him, but Mickey's inexperience leads to uncomfortable and joyless sex. The next morning, Mickey and Uncle Phil wish Jolene a "Happy Birthday" with Kay asking Jolene to clean the floor. Uncle Phil walks in as Jolene is cleaning the floors, is aroused and they have sex. Starting an affair, they have passionate sex, with Phil promising to build a house for "just the two of them", but asks Jolene to keep the affair clandestine. Eventually, Kay walks in on them having sex and violently throws Jolene out of the house, Mickey, Phil and Kay fight, then Mickey walks out and commits suicide by jumping off a bridge. Aunt Kay has Jolene placed in a juvenile mental institution, meeting Cindy, a psychiatric nurse. Jolene asks for paper and colored pencils to draw. Her request is denied, but she is allowed crayons. Uncle Phil, visibly gray-haired, haggard and old-looking, is later sentenced to 18 months in prison. Cindy, a lesbian, takes a liking to Jolene and this culminates in another clandestine relationship. Cindy breaks Jolene out of the mental hospital and hides her, but Jolene soon breaks free and boards a bus west out of South Carolina forever. Jolene resorts to hitchhiking further west, supporting herself by prostitution.

The film is set Ireland in the early 1960s in the small town of Clones. Francie Brady (Eamonn Owens) is a 12-year-old boy whose imagination is fuelled by television - aliens, communists, the Atomic Age. When his mother (Aisling O'Sullivan) suffers a nervous breakdown and ultimately commits suicide, he is left in the care of his father (Stephen Rea), an emotionally distant and ill-tempered alcoholic. Francie spends most of his time with his best friend Joe Purcell (Alan Boyle) talking about "gangsters, cowboys and Indians, comic-book monsters and the early-1960s threat of nuclear annihilation." However, when Francie's growing conflict with another boy, Phillip Nugent (Andrew Fullerton), and his mother (Fiona Shaw) begins to go too far, he ends up at reform school. Here, he is molested by a priest (Milo O'Shea), and finds solace only in his fantasies about a foul-mouthed Virgin Mary (Sinéad O'Connor). He returns home to find Joe has outgrown him and befriended Phillip Nugent. Before long, his father has drunk himself to death. Faced with being left completely alone in the world, Francie loses his grip on reality and lashes out with uncontrollable brutality, which shocks his provincial hometown.
