Add to a movie listThe Vigilantes Are Coming is a 1936 American Republic film serial. It was the third of the sixty six serials made by Republic Pictures (and the third released in 1936).
This serial was filmed between 28 May and 17 June 1936 under the working title of The Vigilantes. It was released two months later, on 22 August 1936, under the final title. In the early 1950s the serial was re-edited into six 26½ minute episodes for television.
Synopsis
Following the discovery of gold in Mexican California in 1844, Russian Cossacks led by Count Ivan Raspinoff, in collusion with General Jason Burr, attempt to invade California and turn it into a Russian Colony with Burr as its dictator. In doing so they round up slaves to work the mines and General Burr has Don Loring's brother and father murdered to acquire their ore-rich land.Actors

Zorro (Robert Livingston) has been captured and set for execution, charged with the murder of the new Governor (Robert Warwick) in Spanish California, as the Governor was marked with a "Z". Zorro escapes, and reveals his identity to the Governor's daughter, Isabella (Heather Angel). However, Isabella then has Don Diego arrested. He convinces Isabella that the Commandante (Sig Ruman) was the real killer, as the "Z" on the Governor was backwards. Eventually, Isabella helps free Don Diego, the Commandante is killed, and Diego and Isabella reunite.

Western movie star Tom Ford (Gene Autry) is scheduled to make a guest appearance at the Texas Centennial celebration in Dallas. When Ford leaves on vacation intending to miss the celebration, his publicity manager Lee Wilson (William Newell) convinces singing cowboy Gene Autry (Gene Autry) to appear in Tom's place. While driving to Dallas from Hollywood, Gene meets Marion Hill (Kay Hughes) when his trailer collides with her wagon. Marion is also on her way to the centennial, intending to enter her show steer in the Texas Centennial. Watching Gene skillfully retrieve her cattle, Marion is impressed to see a movie star perform like a true cowboy.

Le samedi matinee foule a deux étoiles de cow-boy pour le prix d'un dans cette série richement budgétisé ouest mettant en vedette l'ancien cow-boy chantant Dick Foran et Buck Jones. Ce dernier a contribué à l'humour pince-sans la procédure, ce qui rend Jones peut-être le soulagement de la comédie B-ouest le mieux payé dans l'histoire. Les deux héros défendent les mineurs de borax Death Valley d'une bande hors la loi dirigée par Wolf Reade. Un casting extraordinairement forte - pour une série, au moins - soutenu les étoiles, dirigé par Charles Bickford comme Reade, Leo Carillo, Lon Chaney, Jr., et l'étoile Monte écran bleu silencieux. Cattle rancher Rance McGowan intends to capture a herd of wild horses but they are protected US government. He trains and disguises his own horse, Volcano, to lead them in stampedes across other ranches which will lead to the government removing its protection. In the process, however, the local Sheriff is killed by Volcano and the Sheriff's friends, The Three Mesquiteers, become involved. Dick Tracy's foe for this serial is the crime boss and Masked Mystery Villain The Spider/The Lame One (both names are used) and his Spider Ring. In the process of various crimes, including using his Flying wing and sound weapon to destroy the Bay Bridge in San Francisco and stealing an experimental "Speed Plane", the Spider captures Dick Tracy's brother, Gordon. The Spider's minion, Dr. Moloch, performs a brain operation on Gordon Tracy to turn him evil, making him secretly part of the Spider Ring and so turning brother against brother.

The plot follows the 1940 version almost scene-for-scene. In the 1840s, the foppish Don Diego Dela Vega returns from Spain to his family in California to find that his father has been replaced as ruler of the area by the cruel ruler Don Luis Quintero. Despite being a skilled swordsman, Diego downplays his skills in front of the evil Captain Esteban and shows himself to be rather a clown in front of his family. However, Diego secretly picks up the sword of justice as Zorro and fights to return justice to the region and his people.
