"The Waiter" is a 2007 feature film written, directed, and produced by Jason Konopisos. The film stars Charles Durning and Glenn Morshower.
The main character, 'The Waiter', is a metaphor for man. Throughout the film this character is plagued by the existential sense of "Ungst" which brings forth questions like "What is Ungst?" and "Is it anything like Angst?" as the audience follows a character who lacks purpose. The man works at his job, yet is disturbingly devoid of self. Many hints are given to the character's previous life as a military man. Despite the loss of self felt by the protagonist, one concept that is often explored is that an individual may lie motionless in his bed while his planet travels at 67,000 miles per hour through space. The complexities and paradoxes of man’s existence haunts him as he attempts to attain an understanding of his circumstances. The character is left without purpose; he is living temporally and moving physically without progressing.
The film also engages in socioeconomic observation focusing on Capitalism and “The Culture of Death”, in particular, the strong socioeconomic influences that direct our daily movement and stagnation. “The Waiter” is the second part of a trilogy, which parallels Dante’s “Divine Comedy” as our main character travels through the Inferno, Purgatory, and Heaven.
Visually, the film is largely inspired by three filmmakers, Stanley Kubrick, Werner Herzog, and Godfrey Reggio. The production company Bacchus Films pooled their resources and raised an initial budget of $76,000. The film was shot using Panasonic DVX-100A purchased by Jason Konopisos with $3000 of his own money. Although much cheaper than its large production studio counterparts, the Panasonic DVX-100A camera shoots at the same 24 frame rate, providing viewers with the same visual experience to which they are accustomed.

Hit men Tom and Jerry wait in a Chicago bar for the go-ahead to kill Stanley. Lynn Schaffer is a loving mother and wife, who gets arrested for a crime she did not realize she had committed. She does not take the arrest seriously at first. Viewing herself as innocent, she goes against the advice of her lawyer to take a plea-bargain. Instead she opts for a trial. Coming as a complete surprise to her, she is convicted, receives the maximum sentence of 10 years and is and sent to a women's prison, leaving behind her husband Larry and daughter Carey. In a bleak post-apocalyptic future, most of Earth's water has been controlled. The Eco Protectorate, a para-military organization, governs the planet's new order. Orphan children, mostly teenagers, live in orphanages created by the Protectorate, designed to indoctrinate new recruits into their service. The orphans play a rough sport which is a hybrid of lacrosse and roller-hockey. Playing is the only thing that unites them other than the futile attempts of the Protectorate to control them. These orphans are Jason, the group's leader (Jason Patric), Terra (Jami Gertz), Tug (Peter DeLuise), Rabbit (Claude Brooks), Metron (James LeGros), and a young deaf boy named Daniel (Lukas Haas).
