The Witness is a film made in 2000 by James LaVeck and Jenny Stein. The name of LaVeck and Stein's non-profit organization is Tribe of Heart.

The film depicts the transformation of a New York City construction contractor with an upbringing where animals were treated with suspicion or indifference to becoming an animal lover and animal rights activist.

Jason Longo was the cinematographer, and Jane Greenberg did the sound.

The Witness has been translated into Spanish, Russian, Polish and other languages as well.

Synopsis

The film begins with scenes showing the day-to-day life of a construction contractor by the name of Eddie Lama. Footage shows Lama discussing a construction job with one of his employees, and Lama also talks about how various different racial and ethnic groups who work at his firm are able to get along together. A scene is shown with Lama petting two dogs, and there is also footage showing that Lama keeps multiple cats in his office.

A freak cyclone hits Los Angeles causing man-eating sharks to be scooped up in water spouts and flood the city with shark-infested seawater. Bar-owner and surfer Fin sets out with his friends, Baz, Nova, and George, to rescue his estranged wife, April, and their teenage daughter, Claudia, after the bar and boardwalk is destroyed in flooding. While heading to April's home, the group stops in a freeway to save people as flooding causes sharks to attack. George is killed and the group learns of a tornado warning. They arrive at April's house just before the first floor is flooded and shark-infested. Collin, April's boyfriend, is eaten by sharks, but the rest of the group escape unharmed.

The film, set between 1953 and 1960, opens with an unknown entity (Keith David) narrating that it has witnessed the evolution of life on Earth and has decided to eradicate mankind because of its capacity of violence and destruction.
