Óscar Dancigers, the producer, asked Buñuel to direct this film after the success of the 1949 film El Gran Calavera. Buñuel already had a script ready titled ¡Mi huerfanito jefe! about a boy who sells lottery tickets. However, Dancigers had in mind a more realistic and serious depiction of children in poverty in Mexico City.
After conducting some research, Jesús Camacho and Buñuel came up with a script that Dancigers was pleased with. The film can be seen in the tradition of social realism, although it also contains elements of surrealism present in much of Buñuel's work.
It earned the Best Director award at the 1951 Cannes Film Festival.
Synopsis
The film is about a group of destitute children and their misfortunes in a Mexico City slum. El Jaibo escapes juvenile jail and reunites with the street gang that he leads. El Jaibo's gang attempts to rob a blind street musician. They fail at first, but later track him down, beat him, and destroy his instruments.Actors

Archibaldo de la Cruz (Alonso) is a wealthy Mexican man. As a privileged child during the Mexican Revolution, he witnessed the death of his governess, who died as she told him a fable about a music box that his mother had just given him. Because of the contents of the story and the coincidental timing of the governess's death, a young Archibaldo concludes that he had killed the woman using the music box. It is from there that his desire to kill begins.

In the beginning, a red/white '58 Plymouth Fury is built at its assembly line. While a worker begins to investigate the engine for any mistakes, the car surprisingly closes its hood on his hand, injuring him. In the 1800s, young orphan Oliver Twist is forcibly brought to a workhouse in an unidentified town In England on his ninth birthday. He and the other resident children are treated poorly and given very little food. Facing starvation, the boys select Oliver (through a lottery) to ask for more food at the next meal, which he tentatively does. This results in Oliver being chastised, and the workhouse officials, who are wealthy, well-fed, hypocritical men, decide to get rid of him. After nearly being sold as an apprentice to a cruel chimney sweep, Oliver is sent to Mr. Sowerberry, a coffin-maker, whose wife and senior apprentice take an instant dislike to the newcomer. After more poor treatment, Oliver snaps and attacks Noah, the snotty older apprentice, for having insulted his mother. Knowing his life with the Sowerberrys will only get worse, Oliver escapes on foot early the next morning.

A stylish, attractive young woman, Célestine (Jeanne Moreau), arrives from Paris to become chambermaid for an odd family at their country chateau. Ce film raconte l'histoire de Nelly (Corinne Luchaire), jeune détenue rebelle au grand cœur, et d'Yvonne (Annie Ducaux), nouvellement promue directrice de maison de correction pour jeunes filles. Au début du film, Yvonne, jeune directrice aux méthodes novatrices, prend en charge la direction d'un établissement pénitentiaire pour jeunes filles situé dans les environs de Nice. Les sévices et autres brimades infligés aux pensionnaires par l'ancienne directrice et ses subordonnées ne font qu'envenimer la situation parmi les détenues. Ne supportant pas le traitement infligé à la pauvre Nelly, après une bagarre suite au déchargement d'un camion de charbon, Yvonne décide de faire appliquer sur-le-champ ses nouvelles méthodes « pédagogiques », ce qui a pour effet de rendre les détenues, la jeune Nelly en tête, plus calmes et civilisées. Nelly finit par se faire nommer « aide-soignante » dans l'infirmerie de la prison, et succombe vite au charme du docteur Guy Maréchal (Roger Duchesne), qui n'est autre que le fiancé d'Yvonne. Nelly, apprenant la liaison du médecin et d' Yvonne, choisit de ne pas dénoncer sa camarade Renée (Ginette Leclerc), laquelle a volé de l'alcool à l'infirmerie et s'est saoulée, non sans avoir semé la zizanie dans la prison. Par loyauté envers Yvonne qui n'est toujours pas au courant de sa liaison avec le docteur Maréchal, Nelly choisit de porter le chapeau pour le vol d'alcool. Mais Renée finit par tout avouer à Yvonne, qui choisit de pardonner à Nelly, et laisse partir son prétendant à Pondichéry sans elle. Tout ceci se conclut par la libération de la jeune Nelly, et conforte Yvonne dans ses méthodes humanistes de directrice de prison.

Marie, une prostituée de Marseille, rend visite, très émue, à son fils Simon qu'elle n'a pas vu depuis longtemps et dont elle a confié la garde à Gilles, un berger de la campagne provençale. Afin d'échapper au milieu délétère familial, Simon, attiré par la mer, se met à fréquenter le port et sympathise avec François, un capitaine de marine marchande… Celui-ci, discernant le malaise et l'isolement du gamin, l'embauche comme mousse pendant que Marie va être entraînée au cœur d'un drame à cause de Paul fourvoyé dans une sordide affaire de faux billets.
