Le Souffle du serpent (Them That Follow) est un thriller américain écrit et réalisé par Britt Poulson et Dan Madison Savage, sorti en 2019.

Synopsis

Au fin fond des Appalaches, la jeune fille d'un pasteur pentecôtiste, Mara, est courtisée par deux hommes : l'un des paroissiens, Garret, et un autre homme qui a quitté l'église, Augie. Son père, Lemuel, dirige une communauté de croyants qui manipulent le venin de serpents afin de montrer leur courage et faire leurs preuves devant Dieu. Enceinte d'Augie, et poussée par les religieux, Mara accepte d'épouser Garret. Un jour, alors qu'il tente de charmer un serpent, un mineur décède. Afin de protéger sa secte, Lemuel demande à Garret de prétendre que les reptiles lui appartiennent. Pendant ce temps, avant son mariage, Mara est auscultée par la mère d'Augie, Hope, qui découvre qu'elle n'est plus vierge et qu'elle porte un enfant en elle. Cette dernière décide de se taire auprès de Lemuel et Garret mais elle oblige son fils à se repentir. Mais l'étau se resserre petit à petit autour du couple interdit, lorsque Augie se fait mordre à son tour et quand Garret surprend sa future épouse avec lui. Alors que son secret est dévoilé à son père et la secte, elle donne son accord pour faire face à son tour à leur tradition meurtrière afin de se purifier.

The film opens with a bloodied and terrified priest slowly making his way across the bodies of thousands of dead soldiers. There are many crows and hyenas roving around the bodies. The priest reaches the dead body of another priest and tries take a small demon idol of the head of Pazuzu from his hand, but, suddenly, the dead priest briefly comes back to life and stops the living priest from taking it. The camera pulls back to reveal that the entire valley is littered with dead soldiers, many have been crucified upside down. The movie then cuts to Cairo, Egypt in 1949, where the young Father Lancaster Merrin (played by Skarsgård, who played the same part in Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist) has taken a sabbatical from the Church and devoted himself to history and archaeology as he struggles with his shattered faith. He is haunted especially by an incident in a small village in the occupied Netherlands during World War II, where he served as parish priest: near the end of the war, a sadistic Nazi SS commander, in retaliation for the murder of a German trooper, forces Merrin to participate in arbitrary executions in order to save a full village from slaughter.

At a government laboratory in rural California, a weaponized version of influenza (called Project Blue) is accidentally released, immediately wiping out everyone on staff except for military policeman Charles Campion and his family, who flee the base. That evening, Campion crashes his car at a gas station in East Texas where Stu Redman (Gary Sinise) and some friends have gathered. When they investigate, they find Campion dying of the flu next to his wife and baby daughter, who are already dead. Campion tells Stu with his dying breath that he was followed from the base by a mysterious figure, and states "You can't outrun the Dark Man". The next day, the U.S. military arrive to quarantine the town. While the other townspeople quickly become ill and die, Stu remains healthy and is confined at a CDC facility in Vermont order to study a possible cure. This proves futile and the superflu rages unchecked, causing civilization to collapse and killing over 99% of the population of the entire world in less than two months.
