The film opens in 1900 as Roberto Colombo, an Italian-American attorney living in the Little Italy section of New York City, is killed by gangsters as he meets with a police officer to give information about an attempt to extort money from him. His widow and son return to Italy where his widow dies. In 1908, his son Giovanni Colombo (Gene Kelly) returns to New York City, determined to conduct a vendetta against the men who killed his father. Mrs. Bramson (Dame May Whitty) is an irascible elderly woman who holds court in a small English village. She pretends to need a wheelchair, and impulsively threatens to fire her maid, Dora (Merle Tottenham), for allegedly stealing and breaking china. Meanwhile, the household learns that the police have searched a nearby river looking for the missing villager, Mrs. Shellbrook. Dora then introduces her Irish boyfriend, Danny (Robert Montgomery), who works for Mrs. Shellbrook. Perceiving that Mrs. Bramson is a hypochondriac who only affects her need for a wheelchair, Danny is charming toward her and says that she reminds him of his mother. In January 1942 (a month after the United States has entered World War II), reporter John Royer (James Stewart) returns to the United States. Au milieu du XIX siècle, au bord du Mississippi, le jeune Huckleberry Finn vit chez la veuve Douglas et sa sœur, Miss Watson. Il a du mal à se tenir comme un gentleman, préférant l'école buissonnière et marcher pieds nus. Une nuit, Pap Finn, le père de Huck, se rend chez M Douglas et lui demande 800 dollars pour qu'elle puisse garder son fils. Entendant cela, Huck décide de partir pour qu'elle n'ait pas à payer, mais il est rattrapé par son père qui l'enferme dans une cabane. Le garçon réussit à s'enfuir, et laisse des indices suggérant qu'il aurait été tué et jeté dans le fleuve. Il remonte le fleuve et, quelque temps après, rencontre son ami Jim, un esclave de M Douglas qui s'est enfui car elle avait prévu de le vendre pour avoir assez d'argent pour garder Huck. À leur insu, les indices laissés par Huck et la disparition de Jim font croire aux autorités que c'est Jim le coupable du meurtre. Jim essaye de gagner un État non esclavagiste et de rejoindre sa femme, et Huck décide de l'aider. Plus en amont ils rencontrent le "King" et le "Duke", qui ont été débarqués d'un bateau pour avoir escroqués des passagers.

Au début du Moyen Âge, les steppes de Russie sont sous la domination des Tartares, qui ne permettent qu'aux Vikings de passer en provenance des pays du nord. L'alliance est rompue lorsqu'Oleg, le chef des Vikings, refuse de se joindre à Togrul le Tartare dans sa guerre contre les Slaves. Oleg tue Togrul et prend sa fille Samia en otage. Le frère de Togrul, Burandai, devenu chef, capture en représailles Helga, la femme d'Oleg, et la livre à ses hommes. Un échange de prisonniers est envisagé mais Samia est tombé amoureuse d'Éric, le jeune frère d'Oleg, et ne veut pas partir. De plus Helga est incapable de supporter sa honte et se jette du haut d'une tour. Oleg et Éric se disputent à propos du sort de Samia, mais ils sont interrompus par l'arrivée des Tartares. Oleg et Burandai trouvent la mort dans la bataille qui s'ensuit et la forteresse viking est détruite par un incendie. Éric et Samia arrivent à s'échapper et trouvent refuge sur un navire qui les conduit dans le Grand Nord.

The film tells the story of a mixed group of Army nurses stationed in Bataan during World War II. At the beginning of the film, the head nurse, Lt. Mary Smith (Margaret Sullavan) begs her superior, Capt. Alice Marsh (Fay Bainter) for more nurses to help deal with the excessive workload, but instead of professional nurses, she is assigned a group of civilians from various backgrounds. They lack experience and require training and find it difficult to settle in. Pat Conlin (Ann Sothern) rebels against Lt. Smith's strict nature, but the group begin to reveal stories from their past and become better acquainted. They also meet a male officer, Lt. Holt (Allan Byron), and Pat becomes infatuated with him, leading to jealousy between her and Lt. Smith who refuses to explain why she is offended by Pat's attention to him. During an air-raid one of the volunteers, Sue West (Dorothy Morris), is separated from the group, and some of the women, including her sister Andra (Heather Angel) search for her. After three days she is found alive, having spent the time trapped in a hut with the corpses of several soldiers who were killed during the attack.
