Synopsis
Natalia, jeune femme de 35 ans, vit avec un mari plus âgé qu'elle et qui l'a achetée dans un orphelinat alors qu'elle avait 16 ans. Leur maison est une gare désaffectée, en piteux état, située près d'un lac et d'une forêt. Le mari meurt brutalement. Elle lui organise des funérailles décentes, mais n'éprouve aucun chagrin. Elle reste seule, éloignée du monde, en compagnie de sa vache qu'elle échange contre une chèvre et un chien. Ses journées sont rythmées par le passage des trains qui parfois s'arrêtent. Serguei, un homme des environs, divorcé et père d'une petite fille, lui rend visite. Elle accepte de passer une nuit avec lui, y prend du plaisir, mais le met violemment à la porte le lendemain. Il revient pourtant, à la fois intrigué et attiré par son comportement inhabituel. Elle le reçoit parfois... pas toujours. Sa métamorphose est spectaculaire. Poussée par une force de vie, indifférente aux préjugés et habitudes qu'elle ne connait pas, elle expérimente une toute nouvelle liberté.Actors

It is October 1941. Soviet Russia has been attacked and invaded by the Germans. The country has begun total mobilization and fighting back. The Great Patriotic War had begun. The Germans occupy large parts of Soviet Russia, including the Pskov Region where some of the province is still free. In this province, a NKVD officer (Sergey Garmash) arrives on his motorcycle. He stops at the officer's building and on the highest floor and speaks to a NKVD-Officer who seems to be a major. He hands him the personal documents of a fallen Red Army soldier. The main NKVD officer known as the "Checkist" eats porridge and drinks milk. Suddenly a German grenade explodes. German special assault troops enter the building and attack the NKVD staff and soldiers. "Checkist" and his NKVD comrade, a political instructor called "Livshits" (Konstantin Khabensky) flee, amid the chaos and gunfire they change clothes in a local laundry, knowing that German troops shoot Red Army commanders, officers and political commissars. Eventually they are caught by soldiers from a German motorized unit who invaded the province and taken many prisoners. (Both Red Armists and local civilians). The prisoners are led westward to the local dislocation point of the German army.

1985. Sur sa route, le brise-glace « Mikhaïl Gromov » doit affronter un énorme et puissant iceberg. The film begins in June 1941. During World War II, the sailor Anatoly and his captain, Tikhon, are captured by the Nazis when they board their barge and tugboat which is carrying a shipment of coal. The Nazi officer leading the raid offers Anatoly the choice to shoot Tikhon and stay alive which Anatoly reluctantly takes, and Tikhon falls overboard. The Nazis blow up the ship but Anatoly is found by Russian Orthodox monks on the shore the next morning. He survives and becomes a stoker at the monastery but is perpetually overcome with guilt.
